India's Justice System Is Trying To Punish Those Who Ferment Sectarian Violence

NEW DELHI — On Oct. 31, 1984, two Sikh bodyguards gunned down Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in her garden. In the three harrowing days that followed, more than 3,000 Sikhs were killed by enraged mobs seeking to avenge her death.

Eighteen years later, 58 people, most of them Hindu pilgrims, died in an inferno on a train in Gujarat, in western India. The fire was blamed on Muslims, and within days 1,000 died in widespread riots.

My Comment: I hope that justice is served, but India has a long and bitter history of religious and sectarian violence and bloodshed. A trial may bring a conviction .... and some punishment. But the underlying causes of sectarian and religious violence in India are not even being addressed or discussed .... and a trial would only be a showcase that will punish only a handful of people when everyone knows that thousands (if not more) were directly involved in this bloodshed.
