Fitch Warns Of Mass Eurozone Downgrades As Frontrunner To Lead Greece Rails At 'Barbaric' Austerity -- The Telegraph

All eurozone countries face downgrades to their debt ratings if the risk of a Greek exit rises following next month's elections, a leading credit agency warned last night.

Fitch Ratings downgraded Greece's sovereign rating to CCC from B- and sounded a wider alert for the rest of the currency bloc. It said it would put the entire zone on downgrade watch if after June 17's poll, "Fitch assesses that the risk of a Greek exit from European Monetary Union is probable in the near term."

Child Soldiers Still Being Used In The Congo Rebellion

Report: Congo Mutiny Using Child Soldiers -- Voice of America

NAIROBI -- Human Rights Watch says a renegade general is forcibly recruiting child soldiers to support his mutiny in the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

HRW's new report says at least 149 boys and young men between the ages of 12 and 20 have been forcibly recruited to fight alongside soldiers loyal to Bosco Ntaganda, a former rebel leader who is already wanted by the International Criminal Court for recruiting children as a deputy commander in the Union of Congolese Patriots (UPC), an armed political group that fought in northern Congo during the country's civil war.

The report says at least seven have died in battle.

Ratko Mladic's War Crimes Trial Postponed Over Evidence -- BBC

The war crimes trial of ex-Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic has been postponed because prosecutors failed to disclose some evidence to the defence.

About 7,000 pages of evidence, which should have been passed to Ratko Mladic's lawyers, were not handed over.

The defence has asked for six months to process that material.

A BBC correspondent says it appears to have been a clerical error, but the presiding judge is under great pressure to grant a very significant delay.

The US Is 'Fully Available And Ready' For A Military Strike Against Iran -- Business Insider

One week before the U.S., Britain, France, Russia, China plus Germany — the P5+1 — meet with Iranian officials in Baghdad for nuclear talks, the U.S. ambassador to Israel went on that country's Army Radio and told the country America "fully available" to strike Iran.

Maayan Lubell at Al Arabiya reports Ambassador Dan Shapiro said that while it would be best to diplomatically resolve concerns over Iran's nuclear program without using military force, "[T]hat doesn’t mean that option is not fully available - not just available, but it’s ready. The necessary planning has been done to ensure that it’s ready.”

Pakistan Wants A $5,000 Transit Fee For Each NATO Container That Goes To Afghanistan

To lessen its dependence on Pakistan, the U.S. military has greatly expanded its use of supply lines through Russia and Central Asia to deliver equipment and material to the war zone in Afghanistan. Those routes, known collectively as the Northern Distribution Network, are much more circuitous and expensive than the supply lines through Pakistan but are also considered more stable. Pakistan Seeks $5,000 Transit Fee For Each NATO Container -- Washington Post

ISLAMABAD — Pakistani negotiators have proposed a fee of about $5,000 for each NATO shipping container and tanker that transits its territory by land into and out of Afghanistan.

The amount is a key sticking point in discussions about the terms of a deal that would allow the traffic to resume, about six months after Pakistan closed its border crossings, according to U.S. and Pakistani officials.

US Scale Model Of Bin Laden House Revealed -- The Telegraph

The Pentagon has unveiled a top-secret model of Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Pakistan, which was used by intelligence officials to plan the raid that killed the al-Qaeda leader.

So secret was the project, that even the model makers charged with replicating the villa in Styrofoam, clay and acrylic would not have known the identity of its occupant.

It went on public display in a Pentagon corridor this week, attracting a crowd of soldiers and office workers.

It was built by a special team at the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency from satellite images.

N. Korea Ship Seizes Chinese Boats for Ransom, Global Times Says -- Bloomberg

A North Korean ship seized three Chinese boats with 29 fishermen aboard and demanded more than $140,000 to release them, China’s Global Times newspaper reported today.

The fishing boats were captured at gunpoint while trawling in Chinese waters on May 8, the newspaper said, citing an owner of one of the boats, identified as Zhang Dechang. He said the captors were demanding 300,000 yuan ($47,500) to release each vessel.

It looks like a border and fishing violation, and the Chinese operators have been fined for their infractions. But .... if this is a rogue operation .... it will be the first indication that the North Korean central government in Pyongyang is now losing control of the outlying regions.

Defense Sequestration Won’t Be Solved Until After Election

Flournoy: Defense Sequestration Won’t Be Solved Until After Election -- The Cable/Foreign Policy

The Defense Department and Congress are playing chicken over $600 billion of mandatory defense cuts identified by a process known as "sequestration," but a compromise probably won't surface until after the November elections, according to former top Obama defense official Michèle Flournoy.

"I think during that period after the election and before the sequestration goes into effect [on Jan. 3], that will be the period when people will become intensely focused on this," Flournoy said in response to a question from The Cable at an event Tuesday at the American Enterprise Institute.

My Comment: I have to agree. Big budget issues that involves cutting the budget are usually kicked down the road for other politicians to deal with. But in this case .... sequestration is forcing politicians to make hard budget decision now .... more specifically .... at the end of this year in a lame duck Congress.
