UN Envoy: Darfur Now `A Low-Intensity Conflict'

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The war in Darfur is now a "a low-intensity conflict" with 150 deaths a month, down from the intense fighting that killed tens of thousands when it began, the peacekeeping chief in the Sudanese region said Monday.

But he warned the U.N. Security Council that "the danger of a serious escalation of conflict in Darfur is ever-present."

The United States accused the Sudanese government of committing genocide not long after the war began in 2003, when rebel groups took up arms against the government, complaining of discrimination and neglect. U.N. officials say up to 300,000 people have died since then, and 2.7 million have fled their homes.

My Comment: This conflict has been going on for 6 years .... 300,000 dead (minimum) and millions displaced .... and this is a "Low-Intensity Conflict"??????

What is then a "High-Intensity Conflict" if I am to use their definitions?
