For top officials, varied challenges in coming decade.

WASHINGTON — The past decade was defined by terrorism, starting with the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001 that led to two wars and big changes in the way Americans travel and live.

What could the next decade hold?

To find out, USA TODAY reporters sat down with some of the nation's top officials who deal with terrorism and intelligence issues day-to-day, including the White House national security adviser, the Homeland Security secretary and the FBI's top intelligence adviser. Others interviewed: the New York City police commissioner, the Senate Intelligence Committee chairwoman and the only person who has led both the top-secret National Security Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency.

My Comment: Each of these experts are very good at defining where and how terrorists will probably strike, but what is completely lacking is a strategy on how to prevent these attacks from occurring in the first place.

Besides the usual platitudes of working on the international scene, convincing other countries who may not share our point of view to agree with us, and monitoring potential threats .... there is no substantive commitment for the US to stop those (primarily in a handful of safe havens around the world) who are openly advocating and promoting mass terror and murder .... and who have the resources to do so.

This focus on attacking terrorism from a legal perspective is what got us into this situation after 9/11. But while I may disagree with the Obama administration's approach, they did receive a mandate from the American people in 2008 to pursue this avenue .... and pursue it they are.
