Senate Clears Way To Confirm Chuck Hagel To Head Pentagon -- Bloomberg Businessweek

The Senate cleared the way for Chuck Hagel’s confirmation as U.S. secretary of defense, as lawmakers voted today to cut off delaying tactics after weeks of partisan acrimony over President Barack Obama’s nominee.

With 60 votes needed to limit debate, the Senate passed a procedural motion 71-27 to block the first filibuster against a nominee for defense secretary. The action sets up a final simple-majority vote at 4:30 p.m. Washington time today to install the former Republican senator from Nebraska as the successor to retiring Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.
