French Troops Seal Off Timbuktu -- Wall Street Journal

French troops surrounded and sealed off Timbuktu on Monday, French and Malian officials said, marking a potential end to 10 months of al Qaeda rule in the ancient city.

In the early hours of Monday, French planes landed paratroopers outside Timbuktu in an attempt to catch militants fleeing to the north, said Col. Thierry Burkhard, a French military spokesman based in Paris. The maneuver was supported by airstrikes, a surveillance plane and a drone. On Sunday evening, a French tactical unit of 600 to 700 troops had seized an airport in the south of the city, said Col. Burkhard.

Helicopters have maintained watch over the contested city, which houses a treasure trove of antiquities and historical documents.

"We control access to Timbuktu," Col. Burkhard said. "The next step is for Mali authorities and Mali forces to retake control of the city."
