The Bosnian Serb leader on trial for war crimes once inspired fear and loyalty but grew isolated during his 14 years in hiding

The men and women who helped hide Ratko Mladic through his many years as a fugitive saw him as a Serb hero. But just in case their loyalty should waver, they were presented with a gift: photographs of their children. The implication was clear: if we can shoot them with a camera, we can shoot them by other means as well.

The Bosnian Serb general, who is now on trial in The Hague charged with genocide and other crimes against humanity, eluded capture for 14 years, with the help of the Serbian military, then his wartime lieutenants, and then his family. But the common factor throughout was fear.

My Comment: I always remarked at the satrt of the decade that how can we find Bin laden if we cannot even find Ratko Mladic in the heart of Europe. Bottom line .... almost all war criminals end up being caught and prosecuted .... the question is when.

Ratko Mladic's War Crimes Trial Postponed Over Evidence -- BBC

The war crimes trial of ex-Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic has been postponed because prosecutors failed to disclose some evidence to the defence.

About 7,000 pages of evidence, which should have been passed to Ratko Mladic's lawyers, were not handed over.

The defence has asked for six months to process that material.

A BBC correspondent says it appears to have been a clerical error, but the presiding judge is under great pressure to grant a very significant delay.

Jauntily applauding his war crimes judges and giving them a thumbs up, Ratko Mladic showed he had lost none of the swagger of the soldier who stands accused of masterminding Europe's most horrific killing spree in modern times. Nor did the man once dubbed the "Butcher of Bosnia" and the "Beast of the Balkans" show any remorse: catching the eye of a woman in the audience — a survivor of the massacre he is accused of ordering in Srebrenica — Mladic ran his hand across his throat. The throat-cutting gesture prompted presiding judge Alphons Orie to hold a brief recess and order an end to "inappropriate interactions."

Mladic To Face Hague War Crimes Tribunal Friday -- Voice Of America

Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect Ratko Mladic will face judges at the International War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague for the first time on Friday, when he will be formally charged with genocide and 10 other counts of war crimes concerning the Bosnian conflict of the early 1990s. He is being held in the custody of the tribunal.

Chief prosecutor for the United Nations war crimes tribunal, Serge Brammertz, will himself be in court Friday when Mladic will be asked to enter a plea to charges of genocide, murder and persecution.

BELGRADE, Serbia – Former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic was captured in a routine raid as he headed out to his garden for a pre-dawn walk, three Serbian police officials told The Associated Press on Friday.

The officials said about two dozen masked, black-clad members of a team of special police had no specific intelligence that Mladic was inside a relative's yellow brick house. The home was one of four hit simultaneously Thursday in the tiny northern Serbian village of Lazarevo.

The arrest of Europe’s most wanted man, alleged war criminal Ratko Mladic, has been hailed as a milestone in the quest to bring justice to the Western Balkans and in Serbia’s path to international rehabilitation.

After 16 years on the run, Mr. Mladic was arrested in the village of Lazarevo, northern Serbia, bringing an end to one of history’s longest manhunts. With international backing, homes had been searched in Bosnia and Serbia, but Mladic – perhaps the single biggest villain of the war – always seemed to be a step ahead.

Ratko Mladic: War Crimes Fugitive 'Arrested In Serbia' -- The Telegraph

Ratko Mladic, the war crimes fugitive accused of orchestrating the Siege of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica massacre, is understood to have been arrested in Serbia.

The former Chief of Staff of the Bosnian Serb Army was reportedly seized by police after an anonymous tip-off.

"He has some physical features of Mladic. We are analysing his DNA now," an Interior Ministry official said.

Serbian media reported that the suspect was living under the name of Milorad Komadic.

The European Commission said it had "all reason to believe" that Mladic could be the man arrested.
