British commandos have stormed an Italian cargo ship which was hijacked by Somalia pirates in the Indian Ocean, rescuing the crew and capturing nearly a dozen pirates.

The Royal Marines liberated the 56,000-ton bulk carrier Montecristo, which was hijacked on Monday off the coast of Somalia.

They released its 23 crew – seven Italians, six Ukrainians and 10 Indians.

“I can confirm that the crew of the Montecristo was freed during the British raid,” said Ignazio La Russa, the Italian defence minister.

He said the operation had been organised in collaboration with Liam Fox, the Defense Secretary.

The 11 Somali pirates on board surrendered without a fight and were arrested. No shots were fired during the raid.
