Britain's Top General In Afghanistan Admits 'Courageous Restraint' Must Change -- The Telegraph

Britain's most senior general in Afghanistan has admitted that rules for opening fire on Taliban insurgents must be "re-examined" following complaints from soldiers that they were too restrictive.

Soldiers and Royal Marines told The Daily Telegraph last week that their lives were being endangered by the policy of "courageous restraint" introduced by Gen Stanley McChrystal to cut down the number of civilian casualties.

In an interview with the Telegraph, Lt Gen Sir Nick Parker said troops in more dangerous areas should be able to use "all the tools at their disposal".

My Comment: Most the Generals in Afghanistan have been saying the same thing .... but someone is stopping them form changing these rules of engagement. My guess .... all fingers are pointing at Afghan President Karzai with White House acquiescence.

Remembering The Massacre At Srebrenica

Thousands Mourn Srebrenica Massacre Victims, Criticize UN -- Voice of America

Survivors have expressed frustration over the United Nation's perceived failure to prevent the killing of more than 8,000 Muslims by Serb forces in July, 1995.

Tens of thousands of people have commemorated the 15th anniversary of Europe's worst massacre since World War II in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica. Survivors have expressed frustration over the United Nation's perceived failure to prevent the killing of more than 8,000 Muslims by Serb forces in July, 1995.

In the summer heat, huge crowds of mourning Muslims attended the biggest funeral near the eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica.

My Comment: When the massacre at Srebrenica was occurring, I was vacationing on the Greek islands in the Ionian Sea only a few hundred kilometers away. Life is sometimes very surreal .... and that was one experience which always reminds me on how life can be incredibly unfair to many others.

Editor's Note

I just arrived from my long trip. Cannot believe how hot and humid the East Coast is. I am also over whelmed with the news and information on what is happening in Afghanistan (and elsewhere).

However ... I am exhausted and I will be sleeping for the next 12 hours. Regular blogging will return later today at 18:00 EST.

UPDATE: Make that 21:00. I am one very tired blogger and I have "tons of stuff" to catch up with first.

What Is Going To Happen In Afghanistan?

Afghanistan is now America's longest war .... and it shows no signs of ending .... in fact .... it is getting worse. With a belief that God is supporting their cause, the Taliban have now recruited a significant force that is fighting a war that is based on a religious conviction (jihad) that we in the West cannot even hope to counter.

Long time readers of this blog know that while I have always been supportive of the U.S. and its allies in Afghanistan, I am deeply skeptical of any success in this conflict. We have as our Afghan allies in this conflict a dysfunctional and corrupt central government, a dysfunctional (for the most part) Afghan security force, and a population that is neutral with our presence in the country (at best), or openly hostile at worse. Coupled this with safe havens in Pakistan's tribal regions, the Taliban have a human resource pool of willing and able fighters at their disposal that can easily replace the hundreds of commanders and soldiers that are killed every month by U.S./allied forces.

What is also a worrisome trend is that the Taliban now believe that they are going to ultimately win this war, a perception that has been reinforced by many of our allies making plans to quickly leave the country within a year (Canada, the Netherlands, etc.), and even more later on (Great Britain, France, and probably Germany).

But the coup de grace has been President Obama's own commitment to draw down U.S. military involvement starting next year .... even though U.S. military commanders have been insistent that any drawdown will be determined by conditions on the ground. This one policy anouncement has caused irreperable harm to the allied cause in Afghanistan, and regardless of what President Obama may say in the future .... the message is clear .... the Americans political establishment is now contemplating and making plans to leave.

My prediction .... with a stagnant economy and an unwinnable war strategy in place, U.S. forces will start to depart en masse before the 2012 elections .... a withdrawal that will accelerate even further if some elements of the Taliban can be convinced to put down their weapons and reach a political compromise with the Afghan government.

But like the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1988, the dye is already in cast .... with only a semi-functional Afghan military and a few outside military advisers in front of their eventual domination of Afghanistan, the Taliban will be successful in conquering and governing much of Afghanistan by 2015 .... if not sooner.

How War News Updates Will Soon Be Covering World Conflicts, As Well As Intelligence, Military, And Political News

I started War News Updates a few years ago as a blog that was to be focused exclusively on the wars and conflicts that plague this earth. I was completely dissatisfied with the coverage, especially on Iraq and Afghanistan, and I felt that a web site dedicated to covering these conflicts by providing multiple news links and sources would be a welcomed change. It would also provide an outlet for my own opinions and commentaries.

I choose the blog model to be my platform to provide this news because it is free and it is a template that is easy to manage. Unfortunately, it is a platform that is inappropriate to provide the comprehensive coverage that I crave and that I am following everyday.

At last count, there are approximately 33 conflicts ongoing today, with most either expanding and/or increasing in intensity. News on intelligence, military trends and appropriations, political strife and disagreements that lead to conflict .... all of this news is now expanding at a rapid rate .... especially as the U.S. continues to decline in world influence and power and other countries rush in to fill the vacuum .... providing additional news and events that need to be covered.

To fill this void I am going to add another platform to cover this news. While War News Updates "the blog" will remain the same, I am already working on a website that will use the Drudge Report type of platform to present the news. While I will make changes to this platform so that copyright infringement will not an issue, I believe that providing war/military/intelligence/political news on one page and updating it a few times a day will serve a valuable need for many of my readers. Drudge has been successful at doing this on covering political/economic/social news .... I hope to do the same in my field.

My goal is to have this new platform online in August, and any feedback from my readers will be welcomed.

Why It Is Time For President Obama To Honor A Living Soldier With The Medal Of Honor

It is time for the country to honor the living.

The Vietnam War was the last time that a living soldier was nominated and awarded the Medal of Honor. For some reason .... since then .... the Pentagon and the Presidency has made the decision to not award this honor to any living soldier. I believe this is a shame since many soldiers have acted courageously .... with bravery and honor .... and who have survived to talk abut it .... and yes .... who deserve such a recognition.

A Medal of Honor recipient will give a face to a war that many Americans now have a distant relationship with, and it will bring home the sacrifices that many of our brave men and women go through everyday. It will also change the dynamics (even for a brief day) the coverage of the war, and the message that we are always being bombarded with when it comes to wars like Afghanistan. When the war is often portrayed as a long story line of mounting casualty lists, operations and logistics, successes and failures .... a Medal of Honor ceremony to a living recipient will be a welcomed change.

Awarding the Medal of Honor to a deserving and living recipient will also be a boost to the morale of our own soldiers .... a recognition of their service, their sacrifice, and now a living symbol of what they must go through when they are deployed to a war zone.

But even with this long neglect of giving the highest honor to a living soldier, I personally expect President Obama to be awarding such an honor in the next six months. Such a presentation would be significant for President Obama, whose own relationship with the military has been tested since he assumed the office, especially since firing General McChrystal.

Will this be a good thing .... I believe it will be.

To All Of My American Readers. Happy 4th Of July
