Citation:

For extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry in action against enemy Japanese forces, above and beyond the call of duty, while serving with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division in the Lunga Area. Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 24 and 25 October 1942. While the enemy was hammering at the Marines' defensive positions, Sgt. Basilone, in charge of 2 sections of heavy machineguns, fought valiantly to check the savage and determined assault. In a fierce frontal attack with the Japanese blasting his guns with grenades and mortar fire, one of Sgt. Basilone's sections, with its guncrews, was put out of action, leaving only 2 men able to carry on. Moving an extra gun into position, he placed it in action, then, under continual fire, repaired another and personally manned it, gallantly holding his line until replacements arrived. A little later, with ammunition critically low and the supply lines cut off, Sgt. Basilone, at great risk of his life and in the face of continued enemy attack, battled his way through hostile lines with urgently needed shells for his gunners, thereby contributing in large measure to the virtual annihilation of a Japanese regiment. His great personal valor and courageous initiative were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

Medal of Honor Recipient Declines Invitation To State Of The Union -- CNN

(CNN) -- The former Army staff sergeant who was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama Monday is declining the first lady's invitation to be her guest at Tuesday's State of the Union address.

Clint Romesha, who was awarded the prestigious medal for uncommon valor in Afghanistan, told CNN that he has decided to spend the evening with friends from his former unit, Black Knight Troop, 3-61 CAV, his wife Tammy -- with whom he celebrates a wedding anniversary Tuesday -- and their families.

"It's such a great honor to be invited to the State of the Union," Romesha, 31, told CNN. "I really feel bad about not being able to go. But a lot of these guys I haven't seen a really long time and I'd like to hang with them just a little bit more."

Afghan War Veteran Receives Medal Of Honor -- Voice of America

WHITE HOUSE — Former Staff Sergeant Clinton Romesha was serving with Bravo Troop at Combat Outpost Keating in Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan.

He and 52 other U.S. soldiers came under an intense AK-47 and rocket-propelled grenade attack from a force estimated at more than 300 Taliban fighters.

Despite shrapnel wounds, Romesha organized and led a counter-attack to hold the outpost, calling in air strikes and helping to recover fallen comrades.

Eight U.S. soldiers were killed and 22 wounded in fighting that lasted through the day.

President Obama will award the Medal of Honor to a celebrated Army veteran on Monday.

Clinton Romesha, 31, a former active duty Army staff sergeant, is being honored for his "conspicuous gallantry" during the Battle of Kamdesh, a day-long firefight in Afghanistan in 2009. He is just the fourth living individual to receive the military's highest honor for service in Iraq or Afghanistan, the White House said.

Romesha is being recognized for leading the charge against hundreds of Taliban fighters during an Oct. 3, 2009 siege on 50 U.S. troops at an outpost near the Pakistan border.

Defending The "Indefensible": Inside One Of Afghanistan’s Deadliest Battles -- CNN 

Next week, President Barack Obama will award former U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Clinton Romesha the nation's highest award for combat valor for his actions in repelling a deadly insurgent onslaught in Afghanistan in October 2009. He is the fourth living recipient to receive the award for service in Iraq or Afghanistan.

In an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper, Romesha describes his thoughts about seeing Combat Outpost Keating for the first time. The remote outpost was at the foot of three large mountains and surrounded by a river on one side as well. By all military standards, the base was virtually impossible to defend because of the looming mountains that would ultimately give the Taliban a tactical advantage to shoot down into the base and offer deep cover to those fighters in the rocky mountainsides.

WASHINGTON — A California congressman said Tuesday that he was considering asking the Pentagon inspector general to investigate why President Barack Obama hasn’t approved the nation’s highest military award for gallantry for a former Army captain whose nomination has been stalled at the White House since last summer.

Duncan Hunter Jr., R-Calif., said that before requesting a probe, he wanted to give the Army and the Defense Department a final opportunity to explain the delay in awarding the Medal of Honor to former Army Capt. William Swenson for valor for acts he performed during a 2009 battle in eastern Afghanistan.

My Comment: Former Army Capt. William Swenson made the unforgivable action of condemning US rules of engagement in Afghanistan .... ROEs that this White House probably signed onto. Does the White House want to award such an honor to an officer who (according to his colleagues and a Medal of Honor recipient) deserves it .... but made that unforgivable sin of speaking out .... sighhhh ... unfortunately yes.

MOH Verdict Stalled At White House: Congressman -- Army Times

The long-delayed Medal of Honor nomination for a soldier credited with saving numerous lives more than three years ago in Afghanistan has been stalled at the White House for months awaiting approval, a congressman told Military Times on Monday.

Will Swenson’s nomination for the nation’s highest valor award reached the White House sometime during the summer, said Rep. Duncan Hunter, R.-Calif. It’s unclear why the award — once lost by Swenson’s Army command in Afghanistan — has not been approved.

My Comment: Everyone who was involved in the battle of Battle of Ganjgal are in agreement that Captain Will Swenson's actions deserve a Medal of Honor .... including Medal of Honor recipient Marine Cpl. Dakota Meyer who fought beside Captain Swenson during this battle. Why the delay .... I suspect that the reason why is that then Captain Will Swenson made the unforgivable error of criticizing the rules of engagement for U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan .... and as a result some commanders lost their job and/or were demoted. This is Pentagon politics and payback at it's worse .... obstruction and obfuscation .... but with no one claiming responsibility for it.

An Army sergeant who ignored his battle wounds to take out the enemy, rescue the injured and retrieve the dead during an ambush by 300 fighters in Afghanistan will receive the Medal of Honor, the White House announced Friday.

Staff Sgt. Clinton Romesha, 31, who has since left the military, will be only the fourth living service member awarded the nation's top honor for courage in Iraq or Afghanistan.

His citation says he is being recognized for "acts of gallantry and intrepity" when fighters attacked Combat Outpost Keating from all sides with rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns, mortars and rifles on Oct. 3, 2009, igniting a daylong battle.

Peralta case an example of modern methods interfering with witness accounts, vets say.

When it comes to the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest award for battlefield bravery, the standard has long been the same: Two eyewitnesses.

San Diego Marine Sgt. Rafael Peralta had seven.

His nomination, though, was rejected earlier this month by the Pentagon for the second time in four years, raising questions about whether modern sensibilities — CSI meets G.I. Joe — will forever alter how combat heroes are evaluated and rewarded.

On one hand are the witnesses, who reported seeing Peralta, already on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head, pull a live grenade to his body and shield his squad mates from the blast during combat with insurgents in Fallujah.

On the other hand are forensic experts who doubt whether he could have consciously smothered the grenade and say the evidence shows it exploded next to his body, not under.

The two sides can’t both be right.

A Marine who was killed after his unconscious body fell on a live grenade during the Iraq War will not receive a posthumous Medal of Honor, it was revealed today.

Sgt Rafael Peralta was 25 years old when he fell on the grenade in Fallouja, Iraq in 2004. Though he perished, his body shielded other American soldiers and saved the lives of other Marines.

The Pentagon told Rep. Duncan Hunter it supports the decision of former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who honored Sgt. Rafael Peralta with the Navy Cross instead of the military's highest honor.

Four F/A-18 Hornet jets streaked high over Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Friday afternoon in a missing man formation. When Number 222 peeled away from the others and landed, it was obvious that the latest aircraft added to Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron (VMFAT) 101 was something special.

The jet parked near a red carpet rolled onto the flight line. Then Gen. James Amos, the 65-year-old commandant of the Marine Corps, climbed out of the backseat of the cockpit. It was the first time Amos, a fighter pilot by training, had flown a Hornet this year, aides said.

Age, Health Chip Away At Roster Of Medal Of Honor Recipients -- Stars and Stripes/The Honolulu Star-Advertiser

America's greatest war heroes are dying.

There are 81 living recipients of the famed Medal of Honor, the military's highest decoration for valor in combat "above and beyond the call of duty."

More than 50 of them will be in Honolulu Oct. 1-6 at the Hale Koa Hotel for the annual Medal of Honor Convention.

Close brushes with death in warfare somehow didn't claim them, but old age, disease and other factors are now taking a toll on their ranks.

At the time of last year's convention in Louisville, Ky., there were 85 living recipients. There were 91 in 2010, 96 in 2009, and 100 in 2008.

Questions Surround Army Captain’s ‘Lost’ Nomination For Medal Of Honor -- McClatchy News

WASHINGTON — Like other U.S. trainers with the Afghan force that day, former Army Capt. William Swenson had expected light resistance. Instead, the contingent walked into a furious six-hour gunfight with Taliban ambushers in which Swenson repeatedly charged through intense fire to retrieve wounded and dead.

The 2009 battle of Ganjgal is perhaps the most remarkable of the Afghan war for its extraordinary heroism and deadly incompetence. It produced dozens of casualties, career-killing reprimands and a slew of commendations for valor. They included two Medal of Honor nominations, one for Swenson.

My Comment: I commented last year that if his military colleagues are even 50% correct in their combat reports on Army Captain William Swenson and his role in the 2009 Battle of Ganjgal .... he should (in my opinion) be considered for a Medal Of Honor. But .... as I said in this post last year .... his criticism of the military leadership and their rules of engagement in Afghanistan after the battle has made him a pariah among many senior officers .... and (sadly) it looks like many of them are still holding a grudge.
