The London Terror Attack Was More Than 'Unforgivable' -- Wall Street Journal

Britain has been in denial about the Islamist threat. Time to face it down.

How many ignored warnings does it take? That is one question that should hang over Britain after the horror of the daytime murder of a British soldier on the streets of south London. On Wednesday afternoon, Drummer Lee Rigby was killed in Woolwich by two men wielding large knives and shouting "Allahu akbar"—God is great.

Islamists have been saying for years they would do this. They have planned to do it. And now they have done it.

The attack itself is not surprising. What is surprising is that British society remains so utterly unwilling not just to deal with this threat, but even to admit its existence. Politicians have called the Woolwich killing "unforgivable" and "barbarous." But expressions of anger should not really be enough.

My Comment: The key section of this WSJ reoprt is the following ....

.... Most of the extremists who have repeatedly expressed their hatred of British soldiers are themselves supported by the British state. A prominent hate-preacher—Anjem Choudary, a leader of the disbanded al Muhajiroun—was even caught on video earlier this year extolling Britain's "jihad-seekers' allowance." As he explained to his followers, "The normal situation, really, is to take money from the kafir"—a slur for non-Muslims. "Allahu akbar. We take the money."

After the video showed up online, a BBC reporter asked Mr. Choudary to clarify how much he's taking—the press has long reported a sum of £25,000 ($37,770) per year. "It's irrelevant," Mr. Choudary replied.

This would not be the first time a country has paid both sides in a conflict. But if the reported figure is anywhere near accurate, it would surely be the first time in human history that a society has paid its opponents better than it pays its own. A British soldier can expect to start in the army on a salary of around £16,000 ($24,172).

If true .... British society and it's government is insane.

Two men were arrested at Stansted Airport on suspicion of endangerment of an aircraft today after an RAF Typhoon jet was scrambled to escort a passenger plane travelling from Pakistan to the UK, police said.

Officers boarded Pakistan International Airlines flight PK709, which is believed to have been carrying 297 passengers bound for Manchester, after it landed at Stansted and removed the men from the plane.

A police spokesman said: 'Essex Police have boarded a passenger plane diverted to Stansted Airport and two men have been arrested on suspicion of endangerment of an aircraft. They have been removed from the plane.'

My Comment: This incident follows on the heels of this airline incident earlier in the day. Something tells me that after Wednesday's brutal attack in London, the Brits are nervous of this.

For 15 years she has proudly served her country as a Royal Navy engineer, risking her life in Afghanistan when she fought against the Taliban.

But far from showing Nicky Howse the respect she deserved as she flew back to her latest posting, Virgin Atlantic staff chose to humiliate her – by demanding that she remove her uniform because it was ‘offensive’.

They warned the 32-year-old helicopter technician she would not be allowed to fly unless she took off her combat fatigues and wore a sleep suit instead.

Britain has no coherent foreign policy strategy, with budgets cuts and government decisions threatening to leave it isolated and weakened, a report has said.

The scathing assessment, published days ahead of a meeting of Nato leaders, found the country’s ‘special relationship’ with the United States was under threat, with a “worrisome” outlook for the future of military capability.

The report, conducted by the US-based think tank Atlantic Council, found the “deep defence reductions” risked undermining the UK’s “special status as one of Nato’s most capable members”.

Looting and arson by gangs of youths spread Monday from poor northern districts of London to the south, to tourist areas of the capital and to Britain's second-largest city as police flooded the streets and announced scores of new arrests.



Prime Minister David Cameron and other senior officials broke off their vacations and returned to London to try to stem the worst outbreak of urban violence in Britain in a quarter-century. It started Saturday night after a peaceful protest over the police shooting of a 29-year-old man in an operation to control illegal firearms.

Violence erupted in broad daylight this afternoon as rioters surrounded police vans, looted lorries and targeted shops in a series of attacks across London.



The violence began in Hackney when a mob of hooded youths began hurling missiles at officers and setting fire to bins and cars. Minutes later similar scenes started in Lewisham, spreading to Peckham and then Deptford.



Meanwhile, police in Birmingham said several shops have been attacked in the city centre this evening, near to the Bullring shopping centre, and property stolen.

Police came under attack from petrol bombs hurled by rioting mobs in North London last night as hundreds took to the streets following the shooting of a man by Scotland Yard marksmen.

Patrol cars, a shop and a double-decker bus were set ablaze and there were reports of looting amid scenes reminiscent of the violent unrest in the same area 26 years ago when PC Keith Blakelock was hacked to death.

Last night the Tottenham area erupted once again as more than 100 officers and specialist riot police faced crowds of more than 500 people protesting about the death of Mark Duggan, who lived on the estate and was described last week by police sources as a ‘gangster’.

The Home Secretary is preparing plans to give terrorists immunity from prosecution in exchange for information on plots over fears that extremists are refusing to answer police questions.

My Comment: Knowing that terrorists may walk away from a jail sentence .... or be imprisoned only for a short time .... makes me want to puke. But then again .... 'plea bargaining' has been a staple of our justice system for years .... instead of gangsters we will now use it to convict terrorists.

Train stations across London have been put on high alert amid fears of a terrorist attack on transport hubs.

British Transport Police cancelled leave and called in extra officers after intelligence was received that terrorists could be planning attacks.

A security source said there was no “imminent” threat and the overall threat level had not changed but there was activity from one of a “handful” of extremist cells that cause concern at any time, leading to an adjustment in policing levels.

It is understood that “intelligence chatter” suggested that transport hubs in London could be a target.

A Government scheme which exempts memorials from VAT expires on Jan 4, and with work on the £4.9m monument now scheduled to begin in May, tax will be payable on labour costs and professional fees.

My Comment: Are more riots and protests in England's future .... the short answer is yes. In every country that has able bodied citizens dependent on a welfare system that sustains and protects them .... once this status quo is threatened the worse comes out. I have seen this in Russia in the early 1990s when the communist system fell apart, I see it in Canada (where I live) where mass protests always come out if certain sacred welfare programs are threatened (i.e. Quebec's $7 a day daycare program), we have seen it in France, riots in Greece .... and we will now see it in England.

With no money in the bank, and government's no longer able to tax those who work .... a breaking point is reached in which the true costs of programs and benefits must be examined. In England, education does not cost a few thousand pounds a year, and staying home while collecting assistance from a government that no longer has the funds to give .... this awareness and realization is happening now.

Expect more resistance and riots in England's future, coupled with the unions, students, the Labor party, and most members of the media voicing support for the protests and a call for more demonstrations and violence.

Students went on the rampage today as a huge protest against the coalition's controversial move to hike tuition fees turned violent.

Around 52,000 students and teachers travelled to London for a march and rally in Westminster against the Government's plans to raise fees from £3,290-a-year to up to £9,000.

Scotland Yard appeared to have been caught on the hop as the peaceful protest descended into riots this afternoon when many left the planned route and headed to Tory party headquarters.

Army cadets have been left ‘bitterly disappointed’ after being banned from carrying rifles on a Remembrance Day parade - amid fears the weapons might 'upset' onlookers.

The young cadets have proudly marched with rifles for decades and around 100 had spent months fine-tuning the drill where they would showcase their skills.

But the cadets were left 'gutted' just days before the big event when military top brass cut the rifles from the display following complaints from members of the public.

British aid projects abroad are to be ‘branded’ with the Union Jack in an attempt to stem growing public anger over the amount spent on international development.

While most Government departments suffered savage cuts in last week’s Spending Review, foreign aid will rise by £3.1 billion by 2014.

The amount is enough to keep the 80-strong Harrier jump jet fleet – which will be axed under the cuts – in the air for 20 years.

My Comment: For as long as I can remember, the argument has always been made that foreign aid actually helps in lessening world tensions and conflicts.

Even if true, the #1 priority for any government should be one's national defense .... national defense in the form of soldiers and equipment. Unfortunately .... foreign aid has a large constituency, and they (with their political allies) have a vested interest to keep such well funded programs alive.

Hence .... no carrier jets, but some village somewhere in Africa may get a functioning well.

Outside the Wellington Way polling station in Tower Hamlets yesterday, as at many other polling stations in the borough, people had to run a gauntlet of Lutfur Rahman supporters to reach the ballot box. As one Bengali woman voter went past them, we heard one of the Rahman army scolding her for her “immodest dress.”

That incident is perhaps a tiny taste of the future for Britain’s poorest borough now it has elected Mr Rahman as its first executive mayor, with almost total power over its £1 billion budget. At the count last night, one very senior figure in the Tower Hamlets Labour Party said: “It really is Britain’s Islamic republic now.”

My Comment: It is hard to feel sorry for the Brits .... after all .... they originally voted in the politicians who opened their borders to let these immigrants in. Elections have consequences .... live with it.

From a national security point of view .... that is where the complications and consequences will eventually be felt by having these extremists in positions of political power.

AXING the RAF's Nimrod spy planes leaves Britain's defences so weak we will have to depend on the FRENCH to stave off a naval attack on us.

French Atlantique planes operating from UK bases will monitor and intercept unauthorised ships and submarines.

The humiliation comes exactly 205 years to the day after Nelson's fleet saw off Napoleon at Trafalgar.

And The Sun can reveal that just as Prime Minister David Cameron was announcing the axing, TWO Russian submarines were intercepted less than 70 miles off our shores.
