Turkey Protests: PM Erdogan Defiant As Clashes Rage -- BBC

Turkey's PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to press ahead with a controversial park redevelopment that has sparked violent clashes.

Mr Erdogan said he would not yield to "wild extremists" and urged an end to the protests.

Clashes over Gezi Park in Istanbul began on Friday and continued there and in the capital, Ankara, on Saturday.

Correspondents say the local issue has spiralled into more widespread anger over perceived "Islamisation".

Mr Erdogan has been in power since 2002 and some in Turkey have complained that his government is becoming increasingly authoritarian.

NATO OKs Patriots And Delivers Warning: 'Don't Even Think About Attacking Turkey' -- CNN

(CNN) -- NATO foreign ministers have approved Turkey's request for Patriot missiles to defend its borders, a statement of "solidarity" with its fellow alliance member.

"Today NATO agreed to augment Turkey's air defense by deploying Patriot missiles to Turkey. Turkey has asked for NATO's support and we stand with Turkey in the spirit of strong solidarity," said NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

"To Turkish people we say, we are determined to defend you and your territory. To anyone who would want to attack Turkey, we say, don't even think about it. "

Turkish officials say they have evidence Assad regime could resort to ballistic missiles if air campaign against rebels fails

A request by Turkey for Nato Patriot missile defences to be deployed on its territory followed intelligence that the Syrian government was contemplating the use of missiles, possibly with chemical warheads, Turkish officials have told the Guardian.

The officials said they had credible evidence that if the Syrian government's aerial bombardment against opposition-held areas failed to hold the rebels back, Bashar al-Assad's regime might resort to missiles and chemical weapons in a desperate last effort to survive.

My Comment: Sharing a long border with Syria, Turkey`s worries are justified. The concern has always been that if the Syrian government should find itself losing the war, it would then resort to specific actions. Closing the internet and much of the communications grid this past week is one of these actions .... using chemical weapons would be the last action. With much of the fighting now occurring near the Turkish border .... and with the Syrian government slowly losing the war .... the danger of this conflict escalating into the use of WMDs becomes not a question of if .... but of when.
