Cambodia – Thailand: Troops Leave Border Temple -- Eurasia Review

Cambodia and Thailand on Wednesday withdrew troops from a disputed area near an ancient temple on their border which had been the site of deadly cross-border clashes, honoring a ruling handed down by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) a year ago.

The troops had been stationed along the border near Preah Vihear Temple for more than four years.

My Comment: Both sides may withdraw their military forces from the contested areas .... but the differences still remain. My prediction .... this is only a short term solution that will come back when no progress is achieved.

A two square mile patch of grassland on the border between Thailand and Cambodia, surrounding the 11th-century Hindu temple of Preah Vihear, has been a regional flashpoint for decades. The skirmishes have escalated in recent years and both countries maintain hundreds of troops along the border. But the fighting could quiet down soon if the sides agree to a ruling today by the U.N.'s International Court of Justice. The court declared that a demilitarized zone should be established immediately in the region surrounding the temple, outlined here in diagrams from the Bangkok Post. The two countries have indicated they would abide by the decision.

Thailand, Cambodia Make Progress On Border Dispute -- CNN

Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) -- Thailand and Cambodia took a step Monday towards resolving a simmering border conflict around an ancient temple, Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said.

The solution will allow for the resumption of talks between the two countries and the deployment of an Indonesian observer team to the disputed territory if the two governments agree to the deal hammered out between foreign ministers, Natalegawa said.

Fighting along the turbulent border has raged since last month. Clashes around the Preah Vihear temple prompted displacement of thousands on both sides and caused at least 20 deaths.

Thai-Cambodia Ceasefire Breaks Down -- Al Jazeera

Border skirmishes continue for an eighth day as both sides accuse the other of breaking a short-lived truce.

A brief ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia has broken down, shattering hopes for a quick end to the border conflict as the two sides exchanged fire for an eighth day.

Field commanders agreed to the truce in a meeting at the disputed border on Thursday. But Cambodian Colonel Suos Sothea said the Thai army fired artillery shells into Cambodia again on Friday and small arms fire crackled anew around the Ta Krabey temple, which lies in a disputed zone along the frontier.

"We cannot trust the Thais," he said. "Yesterday they said they'd stop fighting and now they are attacking us again."

The death toll since the clashes has risen to 16.

Thailand has canceled plans for ceasefire talks with Cambodia, scuttling hopes for an early end to the worst fighting along their disputed border in decades. Each side blames the other for the breakdown and clashes that have killed 14 people since Friday, including at least one civilian.

The abrupt pull-out deflates hopes for a truce to end a deadly border fight.

Thai Defense Minister Prawit Wongsuwan was to meet in Phnom Penh with his Cambodian counterpart, Tea Banh to discuss ending a week of clashes between their militaries.

Thai-Cambodia Clashes Spread East To Preah Vihear -- BBC

Fighting has erupted between soldiers from Cambodia and Thailand along their disputed mountainous border for a fifth consecutive day.

Spokesmen from both sides said skirmishes broke out near the Preah Vihear temple on Tuesday.

The violence follows four days of fighting around the temple of Ta Krabey, 160km (100 miles) to the west.

At least 12 soldiers have been killed in the latest outbreak of violence between the two neighbours.

Thailand-Cambodia Clashes Continue -- The Hindu

Exchange of gunfire across the Thai-Cambodia border continued on Saturday, each side accusing the other of unveiling a newly-minted aggressive agenda.

In Bangkok, the Foreign Ministry said one Thai soldier was killed, raising the Army's death toll to four in two successive days of fighting. Many Thai soldiers were also said to have sustained injuries. And, a Cambodian military official in Phnom Penh broke down as he announced several deaths on his side.

Cambodia's Ministry of National Defence said “the apparent goal of Thailand's military aggression is to take control over … Tamone and Ta Krabei temples of Cambodia.”

These two temples, located “deep inside the Cambodian territory,” are distinct from the border-temple of Preah Vihear.

Thai, Cambodian Forces Clash Kills 6 Soldiers -- CBC

At least six soldiers were killed Friday during clashes between Thai and Cambodian forces near two temples in a contentious border region, according to reports.

The two sides exchanged fire with rockets, machine-guns and rifles near Ta Krabey and Ta Moan in Thailand's Surin province, with nationalist fervor in both countries said to be partly responsible for fuelling the decades-old dispute over the temples and the surrounding land.

Thai and Cambodian authorities say fresh fighting broke out between their soldiers, with each side once again blaming the other. The new skirmish came shortly after the United Nations Security Council urged the two countries to impose a ceasefire around the disputed border, which saw heavy fighting earlier this month.

Several hours of shelling and machine gun fire subsided at around 11 a.m. (11 p.m. EST on Sunday), creating an uneasy peace in the 4.6-sq-km (two-sq-mile) contested area around the Preah Vihear temple claimed by both Southeast Asian neighbors.

BANGKOK, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Thai and Cambodian army officers agreed after meeting that the clash earlier Sunday between their military patrols in an area claimed by both countries was caused by misunderstanding, Thai News Agency reported.

According to the report, Col Thanet Wongcha-um, chief of staff of the commander for the Suranaree Task Force and Col Thawatchai Changprachak, commander of a special unit from Thailand's Ranger Forces Regiment 23 on Sunday met Maj-Gen Srey Doek, commander of Cambodia's 3rd Reinforcement Division at an operation base in Kantharalak district following the clash, in which two Thai soldiers wounded.

SI SA KET : Dozens of protesters, police and villagers were injured in fiery clashes near the border with Cambodia yesterday as a protest by the People's Alliance for Democracy spun out of control.

The government declared martial law as PAD supporters, in a protest over sovereignty, met unexpected resistance from hundreds of Si Sa Ket villagers who blocked their path.

The PAD was trying to march to a disputed border area close to Preah Vihear temple. Stick-wielding protesters clashed repeatedly with riot police and villagers who were trying to keep them out.

PREAH VIHEAR, Cambodia (AFP) — Cambodian and Thai officials held talks to prevent fresh fighting on their border Sunday after tensions over disputed land around an ancient temple flared into deadly gunbattles.

A third Thai soldier died in hospital following Friday's clashes, which rattled relations between the neighbours just days before a regional summit that was supposed to focus on the global economic slowdown.
