Another Night Of Rioting In Stockholm

Rioters Continue To Battle Police In Sweden -- Al Jazeera

Nine cars and two schools torched as fifth night of violence sweeps immigrant-dominated areas of Stockholm.

At least nine cars were torched and two schools and a police station were set ablaze as riots swept through Stockholm's immigrant-dominated suburbs for the fifth straight night, police and firefighters have said.

Early on Friday, police told Swedish news agency TT that eight people had been arrested so far for the night's rioting, but no injuries were reported.

Police said on Thursday they would be calling in reinforcements from other parts of the country as they prepared for more trouble.

The riots have sparked a debate in Sweden about the assimilation of immigrants, who make up about 15 percent of the population.

Russia Mocks Sweden's Inability To Defend Itself

Russia Mocks Sweden's Lack Of Military Might -- The Local

Russians have seized on statements by the top Swedish military commander about Sweden's limited capacity to defend itself, responding with an Abba-inspired satirical jab broadcast on national television.

In January, Swedish Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Sverker Göransson said that Sweden’s scaled backed military leaves the country vulnerable.

Sweden, he claimed, could only defend itself for one week if it came under attack.

The controversial admission of Sweden's dwindling military capacity has been seized upon by Russian national television in a sketch on the satirical programme Yesterday Live.

My Comment: I posted a story two weeks ago on Sweden's inability to defend itself. I guess some Russians have taken it to heart. As for the above video .... be prepared to be scarred for life (Yup .... it's that bad).

Can Sweden Defend Itself?

Military Experts Doubt Sweden’s Ability To Defend Itself - Defense News/AFP

STOCKHOLM — Military experts said Sweden was probably unable to defend itself on its own in the event of an invasion, in a report published Thursday, saying the armed forces lacked necessary resources.

“Can We Defend Ourselves For a Week?” the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences asked in the title of its report.

Sweden is not a member of NATO and has a policy of military non-alliance, though it does participate in the Alliance’s Partnership for Peace program.

The report echoed comments made by Sweden’s chief of the armed forces, Sverker Goeranson, in the media in early January, when he said the Scandinavian country would be able to hold off an attack for only “about a week” following repeated cuts to the defense budget. Goeranson has been on sick leave for exhaustion since making his remarks.

My Comment: Approximately 14,000 active personnel and 10,000 reserve coupled with a budget of about $6 billion USD (info is from Wikipedia) .... realistically .... Sweden dos not have a military. But at least they are making some changes. On a positive note .... who is going to invade Sweden?

Update: It seems that some in the Swedish military have too much time on their hands (pun intended).

Sweden's Military Would Not Be Able To Defend Sweden

Sweden’s Defence 'Not Fit For Battle': Expert -- The Local

Sweden’s armed forces would not be able to defend Sweden should the need arise, according to experts, who point to the lack of protection against radiation, chemical and biological warfare, and the needs for field hospitals and helicopter training.

“The Swedish armed forces could not be deployed if the situation would require it,” said defence analyst Johan Tunberger, formerly of Sweden's Defence Research Agency (Totalförsvarets forskningsinstitut, FOI) to daily Svenska Dagbladet (SvD).

The government, prioritizing a “balanced economy” thinks that the armed forces should be reformed without a new cash injection; something Tunberger says is a recipe for disaster.

My Comment: The Swedish government recognizes the problem .... but they only spend $1.3 billion a year .... and are unwilling to spend more money. Talk about a recipe for a mess.

Sweden Has 200 Violent Islamists, Security Service Says -- BBC

A report by Sweden's Security Service says about 200 people in the country are involved in Islamist extremist networks which promote violence.

They present a threat to "groups and individuals" but not to the government or other key institutions, it adds.

The report - requested by the government in February - was published on Wednesday, four days after a suicide bomber injured two people in Stockholm.

Officials say they are 98% sure he was Iraq-born Taimour Abdulwahab al-Abdaly.

Is Sweden Becoming A Hotbed For Somali Extremists?

Sweden Rattled By Somali Militants In Its Midst -- Washington Post

STOCKHOLM -- Ten subway stops from downtown Stockholm is "little Mogadishu," a drab suburb of the Swedish capital where radical Islamists are said to be recruiting the sons of Somali immigrants for jihad in the Horn of Africa.

Police and residents say about 20 have joined al-Shabab, an al-Qaida-linked group waging a bloody insurgency against Somalia's government, and many of them came from the suburb of Rinkeby - the heart of Sweden's Somali community. According to SAPO, the Swedish state security police, five of them have been killed and 10 are still at large in Somalia.

My Comment: The Swedes opened their doors to Somalis and others as an act of compassion .... but almost everyone did not calculate the consequences if these immigrants choose not to accept the cultural norms of Sweden.

They are calculating the consequences now.
