South Sudan Army Says Retakes Town From Rebels In East -- Reuters

(Reuters) - South Sudan's army has retaken an eastern town captured by rebels two weeks ago, a military spokesman said on Monday, in a conflict that has uprooted thousands of people and hampered government plans to explore for oil.

Army spokesman Philip Aguer said four soldiers and a dozen rebels were killed during a brief battle on Sunday to recapture Boma town in Jonglei state, where the government wants to search for oil with the help of France's Total.

"The SPLA (army) restored order and control of Boma yesterday. I was there myself," Aguer told Reuters.

But Peter Konyi Kubrin, a spokesman for rebels also known as the South Sudan Democratic Army, denied they had lost the town.

South Sudan Rebels Accept Amnesty Deal To End The Fighting

South Sudan Rebels Surrender in Oil-Rich North in Amnesty Deal -- Voice of America/Reuters

UBA — An estimated 3,000 South Sudanese rebels have surrendered and accepted an amnesty, a government official said on Friday, ending a long-standing insurgency in the oil-producing north of the country.

South Sudan's government has been struggling to contain several insurgencies it claims are supported by its old civil war foe Khartoum since it gained independence from Sudan in July 2011. Sudan denies the claims.

Relations between the Sudans have thawed in recent months, paving the way in April for the resumption of the South's oil being piped through Sudan after a 15-month shutdown.

(Reuters) - More than 150 people have been killed in a battle between South Sudan's army and insurgents in the eastern Jonglei state, officials said on Thursday.

The African country's army earlier this month launched an offensive against rebels led by David Yau Yau in Jonglei where the government hopes to search for oil with the help of France's Total.

Since winning independence from Sudan in July 2011, South Sudan has been struggling to impose its authority across vast swathes of territory bristling with weapons after decades of civil war with Khartoum.

Yau Yau mounted a rebellion last year, with support from his Murle ethnic group, after losing local elections in 2010.

South Sudan's armed forces shot down a UN helicopter on Friday, killing all four crew on board. UN spokesman Eduardo del Buey said the helicopter from the UN mission in South Sudan was on a reconnaissance mission when it was hit.

"Initial reports indicated the UN helicopter crashed and burned. The mission immediately launched a search and recovery mission. It has confirmed the death of all four crew members," Del Buey said.

One year ago, South Sudan became the world’s newest nation. Today, it has oil wealth it can't ship to market, impoverished citizens it can't seem to feed or house, and a feud with Khartoum it can't seem to end.

Turning the landlocked but oil rich South Sudan into a functioning country was never going to be easy, of course. But doing so in the midst of an economic dispute with its neighbor and rival, Sudan – a dispute over how much money South Sudan should pay Sudan to pump oil through Sudan’s pipelines and out to international markets – has been crushing. NAIROBI — On Monday, South Sudan will celebrate its one-year anniversary as an independent nation. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan was given a one-year mandate to ensure the protection of civilians, help with peace consolidation, and assist in state building. Hilde Johnson, the U.N. secretary-general's special representative in South Sudan, met with reporters Thursday and discussed her observations of the country's and mission’s first year.

The Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005 between the government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement was intended to end the second Sudanese civil war, develop democratic governance, and force the sharing of oil revenues on an equitable basis. It also required a referendum by which the people of southern Sudan could decide their future.

Fleeing a column of 10,000 enemies in South Sudan's tribal wars, Meroi, eight months pregnant, and her family darted across the parched wilderness for four days before rival militiamen caught up and pinned them against a riverbank. Children were bludgeoned, and old men hacked to bits. The air was alive with bullets and screams. Meroi survived, fleeing across the river.

KAMPALA, Uganda — The death toll from a cattle raid in an estranged region of weeks-old South Sudan rose significantly on Monday with the United Nations saying more than 600 people had been killed.



The fighting, a retaliatory attack last Thursday by ethnic Murle on three Nuer villages, was originally reported to have resulted in 58 deaths. But on Monday, the United Nations said the flow of information had been hampered by vast distances and poor logistics.

The United Nations Security Council has recommended newly-independent South Sudan for U.N. membership.

In a statement Wednesday, the council noted South Sudan's commitment to upholding the U.N. charter and said it looked forward to the new country joining the world body.

The U.N. General Assembly is expected to vote in favor of South Sudan's membership Thursday.

The new nation will become the 193rd member of the U.N.

Juba, SOUTH SUDAN— South Sudan became the world’s newest nation and effectively one of the poorest on Saturday, but for at least today this grim fact did little to spoil the party in the streets of Juba.

Scores of ecstatic southerners waving flags of the new Republic of South Sudan, honked horns, danced in the streets to the steady beat of drums and chanted “oye, oye” in celebration in the south’s capital city.

“We’re very happy today,” said a beaming George, sporting a T-shirt that read: “Free at Last!”

The Disarray Of The South Sudan Army

The Sudan People's Liberation Army, a guerilla movement turned future national army, is struggling to make the transition and bring troops under control of the central command.

The South Sudanese army has been at the verge of war with the north's Sudan's Sudanese Armed Forces since the north invaded a contested border zone two weeks ago. Though independence looks set to become official in July, the picture on the ground here in the south is increasingly messy.

The Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) is a former guerilla movement that fought a liberation struggle and civil war against the northern Sudanese government for more than two decades before signing an internationally-brokered peace deal in 2005. The deal granted the South the right to decide whether to break away from the north and form a new state.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – The U.N. chief on Friday urged north and south Sudan not to unilaterally claim ownership of the oil-rich region of Abyei, saying it could wreck attempts to peacefully resolve a dispute over who will control it.

"The Secretary-General (Ban Ki-moon) is deeply concerned by the continued tension in the Abyei area and underscores that the military stand-off is unacceptable," Ban's press office said in a statement, echoing remarks by the U.S. State Department on Thursday.

"He (Ban) deplores that the persistent deadlock has led to further loss of life," the statement said.

ADDIS ABABA – Reports have revealed that tensions are running at an all time high in the disputed region of South Kordofan as locals gear up for the much delayed legislative and executive elections to choose a governor and council of ministers for the fertile oil-producing state.

The May gubernatorial election was originally scheduled to be held April 2010 during the presidential and parliamentary elections but was delayed due to disagreements over 2008 census conducted by the government of Omar al-Bashir. The results were rejected by Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), South Sudan’s main party. They accused the Khartoum government of gerrymandering, claiming that al-Bashir was endeavouring to load the dice in his own favor. The SPLM immediately called for recount of population and housing census with more say for the south.

South Sudan Training Darfur Rebels - Bashir Adviser -- BBC

An adviser to Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir has accused southern leaders of training rebels from Darfur in order to destabilise the north.

Mustafa Ismail Osman was responding to accusations from the south that the north was stirring up trouble ahead of southern independence in July.

He warned the south that its support for Darfur would not be tolerated.

Tensions are again rising between north and south, after years of war which left some 1.5 million people dead.
