Russia Voices It's Fears That The North Korean Situation Could Spiral 'Out Of Control'

Russia Calls On U.S., North Korea To Step Back From The Brink -- NPR

Russia is calling on the U.S. and North Korea to end an escalating cycle of dangerous provocations after Pyongyang put its missile forces on high alert and American stealth bombers flew practice bomb runs over the Korean Peninsula.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking in Moscow on Friday, said the tit-for-tat moves were becoming a "vicious cycle" that could "simply get out of control," Reuters reports.

Lavrov, apparently referring to U.S. actions, said Russia is concerned that in addition to U.N. Security Council sanctions aimed at Pyongyang's nuclear program, "unilateral action is being taken around North Korea that is increasing military activity."

North Korean Leader Kim Jong-il Travels To Russia To Meet Medvedev -- The Telegraph



North Korean leader Kim Jong-il arrived in Russia on a special train on Saturday as the isolated state tries to reach out to regional powers and seek economic aid.



In his first public visit to Russia in nearly a decade, Kim will meet President Dmitry Medvedev and will spend time in the country's Far East and Siberia.



Russia is a member of the long-stalled six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear programme, though China now holds more influence with North Korea than Russia does.

Russia Deploys System To Counter N Korean Missiles -- Times Of India

MOSCOW: Russia has deployed its most advanced S-400 Triumf anti-missile defence systems in its far eastern region to counter the threat posed by North Korean missile tests, a top military official said on Wednesday.

"We have already deployed a battalion of the S-400 systems in Russia's Far East in order to guarantee protection from failed launches of (N Korean) missiles and to ensure that the fragments of these missiles never fall on the Russian territory," chief of the general staff, Gen Nikolai Makarov was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.
