Glenn Greenwald: 'Slavishly Partisan' Democrats In The Media Are Cheerleading Policies They Used To Hate -- Brett LoGiurato, Business Insider

New revelations about the National Security Agency's surveillance programs have divided members of Congress and of the media apart from the normal partisan split.

One person who isn't surprised about the lack of Democrats and liberals in the media challenging the Obama administration, however, is the man who has broken multiple stories based off leaks from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden — Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald.

Greenwald told Business Insider late Tuesday night that he thinks some left-leaning members of the media — such as Time magazine's Joe Klein and The New Yorker's Jeffrey Toobin — have shifted stances on surveillance and civil liberties for "principle-free, hackish, and opportunistic" reasons.

My Comment: Not everyone in the main stream media are that "slavishly partisan" .... but he is right .... many in the media are pursuing and promoting their political beliefs/agenda than covering and researching the news.

The former intelligence worker who was the source of bombshell stories on top secret government snooping programs first approached the Washington Post with his trove of information in early May, the Post's Barton Gellman has reported.

But the Post refused to fulfill some of Edward Snowden's specific requests, so Snowden took his information to The Guardian's Glenn Greenwald, who then became the first to publish a story on the leaks.

When Janine Gibson, the editor in chief of The Guardian’s Web site in the United States, realized that one of her columnists had a scoop about secret National Security Agency surveillance — potentially one of the biggest leaks in American intelligence history — she presented it to The Guardian’s top editor in London with classic British understatement.

“I’ve got a little story to chat to you about,” she told the editor, Alan Rusbridger.

Last week’s revelations about the extent of N.S.A. surveillance both in the United States and abroad is a major coup for the British news organization, which established a beachhead here less than two years ago. Mr. Rusbridger, who flew to New York from London last Wednesday in anticipation of the scoop, credits the story to the fact that The Guardian continues to invest in journalism when many news organization have cut back.

My Comment: It should be noted that the Washington Post was the first to have this exclusive .... but they declined to publish it.The Washington Post is blaming Edward Snowden's demands for the reason why they backed out .... but I am not convinced. I suspect that the Washington Post actually did know the significance of this leak .... but they were looking at it from a different angle .... i.e. how will reporting the leak impact the paper, the legal consequences, and will disclosing it change it's close relationship with the White House. The Guardian took a different route .... they saw the leak for what it was (a big scoop), and they jumped on it. As a result .... everyone is reading The Guardian .... and the Washington Post is now playing catch-up.

My Comment: I am not a fan of Glenn Greenwald, but he has been spot on in this story. His exchange with Mika Brzezinski starting at the 9:25 mark in the above video is priceless. The U.S. press is behind in their coverage on this story .... and as I have said before the go-to place for coverage on this NSA story is the British press .... specifically the Guardian.

My Comment: One of the reasons why I started this blog was my dissatisfaction on the mainstream media in covering defense/war/intelligence stories. The fact that they have also failed in covering this administration and the scandals that now plague it does not surprise me. All that I can say is thank God for the internet, alternative media, social media, and those who are risking a lot in exposing programs and policies that the government and their media supporters do not want disclosed.

NEW YORK -- Associated Press president and chief executive Gary Pruitt told staff at a Wednesday town hall meeting that the phone records obtained by the government included "thousands and thousands" of calls in and out of the news organization, according to a staffer who attended.

The AP revealed on May 13 that the Justice Department had seized records for 20 separate phone lines over a two-month period as part of a leak investigation, but has not mentioned how many calls may have been affected.

My Comment: The above video is from two weeks ago. As for today's comments by AP CEO Gary Pruitt, only RT is carrying it (so far). I mentioned two weeks ago that my gut was telling me that this was probably the tip of the iceberg .... today's AP CEO Gary Pruitt's comments now confirm this. This is very disturbing news, and I expect even more information on how extensive this monitoring was to become unveiled in the next few days.

Update: Many in the mainstream media are starting to get upset with this White House .... as they should be. But the man who is ultimately responsible for this leak probe .... and has made no apologies about it .... is still being given a free pass by the press. When President Obama is not being given this 'free pass' is when I will start to believe that the Washington Press corp is getting serious about this scandal and others .... until then .... this is all for show.

A “secret” Facebook group of foreign correspondents and human rights activists quickly devolved into an anti-Israel hate-fest on Tuesday following the release of a new Israeli government report that cleared the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) of wrongdoing in the 2000 death of a Palestinian boy.

The Israeli government report contests the claim that the IDF killed a Palestinian boy, Muhammad al-Durrah, in a famous 2000 incident in Gaza that helped ignite the Second Intifada.

Journalists and activists mocked the report, attacked the IDF, and claimed pro-Israel lobbyists were influencing the media coverage, in a private Facebook group for foreign correspondents known as the “Vulture Club.”

My Comment: Would the media have reacted the same way if someone like President George Bush did this under his watch .... I doubt it. As a consequence .... the media's lack of outrage on the AP story is disturbing for the simple reason that it now sets a precedent for future leak investigations .... and how the government will conduct itself.

(Reuters) - The Associated Press on Monday said the U.S. government secretly seized telephone records of AP offices and reporters for a two-month period in 2012, describing the acts as a "massive and unprecedented intrusion" into news-gathering operations.

AP Chief Executive Gary Pruitt, in a letter posted on the agency's website, said the AP was informed last Friday that the Justice Department gathered records for more than 20 phone lines assigned to the agency and its reporters.

"There can be no possible justification for such an overbroad collection of the telephone communications of The Associated Press and its reporters," Pruitt said in the letter, which was addressed to Attorney General Eric Holder.

An AP story on the records seizure said the government would not say why it sought the records.

The records obtained by the Justice Department listed outgoing calls for the work and personal phone numbers of individual reporters, general AP office numbers in New York, Washington and Hartford, Conn., and the main number for AP reporters in the House of Representatives press gallery, according to attorneys for the AP. Update 18:08 EST: If true .... and it looks like it is .... this is an unbelievable story. Benghazi, IRS politically targeted investigations, Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius' solicitation of Obamacare outreach funds, and .... God knows what else is out there. The inaccurate report by CNN and other news organizations about an arrest in the Boston bombing case was arguably one of the most flagrant errors on a story of major national consequence in years.

When the news organizations later corrected their mistakes, there seemed to be something missing — any big shows of contrition, or even a sense of the magnitude of the error.

It fell to Twitter and the merciless mockery of Jon Stewart, who devoted much of “The Daily Show” to skewering CNN’s John King, to call out the media for their failures.

 In an earlier era, many news veterans told POLITICO, a wrong report on a story the whole world was watching would have produced major repercussions — groveling apologies from reporters and editors, journalism seminars on the dangers of letting rumor outpace fact, and maybe even a few firings at the outlets involved.

F.B.I. Criticizes News Media for False Reports Of An Arrest In The Boston Bombing -- New York Times

The F.B.I. scolded several news media outlets on Wednesday for mistakenly reporting that an arrest had been made in the Boston Marathon bombing case, and warned that such unverified reporting could have “unintended consequences” for its investigation.

Numerous organizations, including The Associated Press, The Boston Globe and several local Boston television stations, erroneously reported Wednesday afternoon that an arrest had been made, citing unnamed law enforcement sources. Two of the most prominent reports came from CNN and the Fox News Channel, both the subject of widespread criticism last June after misreporting the result of the Supreme Court ruling on President Obama’s health care overhaul law.

CNN and Fox News spent about an hour discussing the news of an arrest with various correspondents and experts before backing off when they received further information.

My Comment: The FBI has a point. I followed and posted what CNN/AP/FOX News were reporting Wednesday afternoon .... and it was all BS. This report is more credible .... the FBI is reporting that they are looking for two persons of interest ... and what is not surprising is that the FBI has made it very clear that they are not going to share these photos with the media.

Max Fisher of the Washington Post reported Monday afternoon on the fear that spread throughout the Muslim world that a potential bomber might turn out to be someone who practiced the same faith. He pointed attention to Jenan Moussa, a reporter for Al Aan TV based in Dubai. Moussa tweeted: "The thought of every Muslim right now. RT @LibyaLiberty Please don't be a Muslim. #BostonMarathon." This morning Moussa retweeted words of condolence from a Muslim cleric saying, "We need more of these voices."

My Comment: I found the international coverage to be very fair and accurate. Because of this blog I read and follow approximately two to three dozen international news sources, and about two to three dozen blogs .... and all of them understood that this was an act of terrorism done by terrorists.

President Barack Obama is a master at limiting, shaping and manipulating media coverage of himself and his White House.

Not for the reason that conservatives suspect: namely, that a liberal press willingly and eagerly allows itself to get manipulated. Instead, the mastery mostly flows from a White House that has taken old tricks for shaping coverage (staged leaks, friendly interviews) and put them on steroids using new ones (social media, content creation, precision targeting). And it’s an equal opportunity strategy: Media across the ideological spectrum are left scrambling for access.

The results are transformational. With more technology, and fewer resources at many media companies, the balance of power between the White House and press has tipped unmistakably toward the government. This is an arguably dangerous development, and one that the Obama White House — fluent in digital media and no fan of the mainstream press — has exploited cleverly and ruthlessly. And future presidents from both parties will undoubtedly copy and expand on this approach.

Full credit is due Obama for his role in the overthrow of Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi. He was cleverly “leading from behind.” But the killing of the American ambassador to Libya and three others in Benghazi—the president bears no responsibility for that. Perish the thought.

My Comment: For the moment .... no. Ideologically .... much of the press and the President are on the same 'progressive' page .... hence the free pass, excuses, and ignoring negative news. But .... and here is my prediction .... if the economy goes south and the public starts to question liberalism and the progressive agenda of President Obama .... the press, unions, academia, Hollywood, etc. will be deserting the President in a flash. In their mind .... the ideology is more important than any one man, and if threatened .... that 'man' is expendable.
