Iran To Message To The World's Biggest Mine-Hunting Exercise In The Persian Gulf: 'We Are Watching You'

Iran Dispatches Warship To Shadow Gulf Exercises -- The Telegragh

Iran has dispatched one of its newest warships to shadow the world's biggest mine-hunting exercise that has been taking place over the last few days in the Gulf.

The frigate Jamaran cruised to within a mile of the western vessels, placing her "almost on top of" the fleet conducting exercises to secure shipping, naval sources said.

Commanders stressed they did not view the frigate as a threat and said day to day relations with the Iranian navy were cordial, but its presence underlined the sensitivity of the exercise in one of the world's most strategically important waterways.

The Jamaran, armed with missiles and torpedoes, was built in Iran and launched in 2010, though it is based on a far older design.

Iran Continues To Expand It`s Navy

The Great Shiite Fleet -- Washington Free Beacon

Iran boosts navy as U.S. withdraws aircraft carrier from Gulf.

Iran is significantly expanding its naval capabilities as the U.S. Navy removes one of its two aircraft carriers from the Persian Gulf due to budgetary constraints.

As the U.S. Navy cuts its fleet to account for impending cuts to the defense budget, Iran has significantly boosted the regional deployment of advanced warships capable of carrying armed unmanned drones and other types of firepower.

The U.S. Navy announced recently that budgetary constraints forced it to cut in half the number of aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf. The reduction comes despite an official Defense Department directive ordering no less than two carriers be present in the region due to concerns about Iran.

Iran Deploys Russian Sub In The Persian Gulf

Iran Launches Sub As US, Allies Hold Massive Naval Drills In Persian Gulf -- NBC

DUBAI -- Iran launched a submarine and a destroyer into the Persian Gulf from Bandar Abbas port on Tuesday at the same time as U.S. and allied forces held massive naval exercises in the same waters to practice keeping oil shipping lanes open.

Tehran has repeatedly threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a route for oil exports from the gulf, if Iranian nuclear sites are attacked by Israel, which believes Tehran is trying to develop an atomic bomb.

The United States, Britain, France and a number of Middle Eastern states are conducting a naval exercise in the gulf this week, focusing on how to clear mines that Tehran or guerilla groups might deploy to disrupt tanker traffic.

Is The US Navy Facing A 'Nightmare Scenario' Against Iran?

Iran Is Readying A 'Nightmare Scenario' For The US Navy -- Business Insider

It's getting easy to overlook the tired rhetoric and hollow tension surrounding Iran, the U.S. and Israel.

It's been months, and months since the back-and-forth began. First, Iran's shutting the Strait of Hormuz, then it's saying it'd never shut the strait. Then Israel's planning a solo attack. No, they're not.

It's frustrating, and more than a little confusing, but that doesn't mean the situation couldn't turn ugly at the drop of a hat.

Why Does Iran Want To Build A Nuclear Submarine

Iran's Nuclear-Submarine Folly -- John Gay, The National Interest

Last month, Iran announced its intent to build nuclear-powered submarines. While some may worry that this is yet another Iranian bid for destabilizing power, there is no need to panic. Tehran will be wasting money it does not have on a tool it does not need. Iranian nuclear submarines are not a realistic threat to American security. They may even be a bluff—Tehran has announced plans for a stealth-fighter aircraft and other high-tech weapons that have never seen the light of day. However, the nuclear program shows that the leadership can commit to internationally and financially costly programs for decades if it believes it will gain security and domestic prestige.

Israel: Iranian Naval Vessels Major Provocation -- USA Today

JERUSALEM (AP) — As two Iranian warships sailed into the Mediterranean on Tuesday, an Israeli leader charged that Iran's goal was dominance in the Middle East.

The ships exited the Suez Canal Tuesday afternoon. It was the first time Iran has sent warships through the canal since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Israeli leaders have called the move a provocation.

"The passage of the Iranian ships is part of the comprehensive struggle that Iran is conducting against the West for hegemony and control in the Middle East," Vice Premier Silvan Shalom told an energy conference in Israel's southern resort of Eilat.

The Newest Threat From Iran In The Straits Of Hormuz

The Bladerunner 51, weighing 16 tonnes and 15.5 metres (45 feet) long is manufactured at the ICE Marine shipyard in Britain and can reach a maximum speed of 65 knots

Iran Navy Produces Armed Copy Of Bladerunner 51 Speedboat -- The Telegraph

Iran says it will mass produce armed replicas of the Bladerunner 51, the British-built speedboat hailed among the fastest in the world, for its navy in the Gulf.

A senior commander said Iran would arm the copy vessel with missiles and torpedoes as it continues to build its military presence in the Strait of Hormuz.

General Ali Fadavi of the Revolutionary Guards's navy, told AFP: "The Bladerunner is a British ship that holds the world speed record. We got a copy [on which] we made some changes so it can launch missiles and torpedoes.

My Comment: I suspect that these boats will be mainly used as suicide attack vessels against bigger targets. i.e. cruisers, aircraft carriers, oil tankers, etc.. The reason why .... it is too small to be effective as a platform carrying torpedoes or missiles. But they should not be discounted .... like the PT Boats during the Second World War in the Pacific .... I will not be surprise if these speed boats become very effective weapons in the confines of the Persian Gulf.
