In Haiti, Hillary Clinton Meets With Candidates, Pushes Preval On Elections -- Washington Post

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI - Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton turned her attention Sunday from Egypt to a crisis closer to home - a disputed presidential election in Haiti that threatens to stall its recovery from a massive earthquake.

Clinton's visit to Haiti came as the U.S. government is pressing President Rene Preval to accept election monitors' conclusion that his handpicked candidate did not qualify for a runoff. "We've made it very clear we support the OAS recommendations and we would like to see those those acted on," Clinton told reporters, referring to the election monitors from the Organization of American States.

My Comment: If these are his motivations, it would not surprise me one bit. But as to what is going to happen to Baby doc .... I believe that he will be charged in Haiti for crimes against humanity, and he will be convicted. As for "his money" .... I doubt that he is going to see a cent of it.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Days after Haitians watched an exiled dictator come home, a former president issued a statement on Wednesday that fueled rumors that he, too, was angling to return.

The former president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a onetime priest of the slums who became Haiti’s first democratically elected president, said he was prepared to return home “today, tomorrow and at any time.” Mr. Aristide was ousted in 2004 in the midst of growing unrest and under intense pressure from the United States.

Haiti's chief prosecutor went with a judge and police Tuesday to meet with former dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier, who returned to the country Sunday after 25 years in exile in France.

From the air they form a neat patchwork of grey and blue, nestling between rundown factories and crumbling slums.

But on the ground these sprawling tent cities are a fetid mass of humanity where cholera and crime run rife.

A year since a cataclysmic earthquake levelled much of Haiti, little has changed for the 1.2million residents still scraping an existence in these squalid refugee camps.

Survivors have been further blighted by an outbreak of the deadly water-borne disease cholera. The illness has struck 155,000 since October, killing 3,651.

January 12th marks the one-year anniversary of the earthquake that devastated the Caribbean nation of Haiti. One-year later, reconstruction is moving at a snail’s pace, millions of people are still without a permanent home, a cholera epidemic has killed thousands, and the recent first-round of the presidential election is under investigation for fraud.

Only an estimated five percent of the capital’s rubble has been cleared, and many streets are still blocked by debris. Makeshift camps in and around Port-au-Prince house more than a million people.

Hundred of women and girls have been sexually assaulted in Haiti in the chaos following last year's devastating earthquake, a human rights group has said.

A report by Amnesty International says armed gangs prowl the makeshift camps set up after the earthquake, preying on vulnerable women.

It says the camps lack security and that the police response is inadequate.

It has called on the government to do more to reduce the threat to women.

The streets of Port-au-Prince are largely calm Monday. But a majority of opposition candidates have denounced Sunday's race as fraudulent. Many fear that peace is only temporary.

Still recovering from the Jan. 12 earthquake and contending with a deadly outbreak of cholera, Haitians are now grappling with the contested outcome of a presidential election that could threaten to undermine tenuous stability in this country.

Two-thirds of the opposition candidates in Sunday's poll have joined together to denounce the race, even though results are not due out for several days. They allege widespread fraud, including voter intimidation and ballot box stuffing, and voters responded with street demonstrations in various pockets of the country yesterday.

PORT-AU-PRINCE • Armed Haitian police had their hands full, keeping apart boisterous supporters of rival presidential candidates in Port-au-Prince as the earthquake-hit Caribbean country heads for turbulent elections this weekend in the grip of a cholera epidemic.

Sporadic violence this week, including street clashes between protesters and UN peacekeepers in the Haitian capital and the northern city of Cap-Haitien, has added the stench of burning tires and tear gas to the stink of squalor and disease from overflowing cholera hospitals and earthquake survivor camps.

PORT-AU-PRINCE—After an earthquake, a hurricane and a growing cholera epidemic, Haiti is approaching its next struggle—electing a president from a slate of 18 candidates with no front-runner.

Among those angling for the job are a former first lady and a popular Haitian singer known as Sweet Micky. With no clear favorite, the decision will likely be thrown to a runoff in January.

Haiti's election could be its most important in generations. Little has been rebuilt in the Caribbean nation after the Jan. 12 earthquake that killed hundreds of thousands and leveled much of the capital.

U.N. officials are calling for a much stronger international response to Haiti's cholera outbreak after new estimates show the epidemic could affect as many as 400,000 people.

Haiti Death Toll Climbs Above 1,200 -- The Telegraph

Health officials on Sunday reported 64 new deaths in Haiti's worsening cholera epidemic, which has now claimed 1,250 lives and seen more than 20,000 people treated in hospital.

The new health ministry figures, the latest since Friday, come one month after the outbreak was first detected north of the capital. It has now spread to Port-au-Prince, where hundreds of thousands of earthquake survivors are living in squalid tent cities with poor sanitation.

The ministry said 64 people have died in Port-au-Prince, including 20 children under age five, but the hardest-hit region remained Artibonite, where the first cases were detected in October.

Violent unrest has spread to Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, where angry Haitians clashed with U.N. peacekeepers, whom they blame for the nation's cholera epidemic.

Reports from the capital late Thursday say protesters threw rocks at the peacekeepers and blocked roads with burning tires.

Violent riots broke out earlier this week after some Haitians accused U.N. peacekeepers from Nepal of bringing cholera to the Caribbean nation.

Haiti Cholera Toll Could Reach 10,000 -- ABC News (Australia)

The cholera epidemic in Haiti could kill 10,000 people and cause 200,000 infections in the coming year, a doctor with the Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO) warned.

PAHO regional adviser Ciro Ugarte says projections show the number of infections could reach 200,000 over the next year.

But he says if the current fatality rate of four to five per cent continues, things could get much worse.

"We may have 10,000 dead," he said, describing this as "the worst case scenario".

Over 1,000 Haitians Dead From Cholera -- Voice of America

The death toll from Haiti's cholera epidemic has passed 1,000.

Health officials made the announcement Tuesday, reporting an official figure of 1,034 deaths as of Sunday.

The authorities said more than 16,700 people have been hospitalized since the outbreak was first reported late last month.

Haiti Protest Turn Violent As Death Toll Reaches 1000 -- The Telegraph

Violence broke out in two cities in Haiti on Monday, amid protests by residents who blame UN troops for the worsening cholera crisis that has now killed 1,000 people.

Two police stations were reportedly set on fire in Cap-Haitien, the country's second city, on its north coast, after demonstrators clashed with authorities at a local UN peacekeeping base.

Local radio reports said that UN and Haitian forces fired tear gas and projectiles at a crowd of at least 1,000 protesters.

Meanwhile UN troops in Hinche, around the centre of the country, were also reported to have been pelted with rocks by 400 demonstrators.

200,000 Haitians Expected To Be Hit By Cholera -- Voice Of America

The United Nations is appealing for nearly $164 million for cholera relief in Haiti over the next six months. Aid agencies say the epidemic is worsening and they anticipate up to 200,000 people will show symptoms of cholera in the coming six months.

Latest World Health Organization (WHO) figures report more than 11,000 Haitians have been hospitalized and nearly 725 have died since the cholera outbreak was confirmed on October 22.
