Administration Faces Objections from Congress, Lack of Cooperation From Foreign Partners

Exactly two years ago from tomorrow, President Obama took the bold step of signing an executive order calling for the shutdown of the controversial Guantanamo Bay detention center "as soon as practicable, and no later than one year from now."

It was one of the first orders of business, and a hugely symbolic step, taken up by the newly-elected president, who argued that such a move would make Americans safer.

Appeals Court Overturns Judge's Guantanamo Release Order -- McClatchy News

A U.S. appeals court Friday ruled that a federal judge was too quick to order the Pentagon to free a Guantanamo detainee who joined and then quit al Qaeda, and was subsequently abused by military interrogators at Guantanamo.

U.S. District Judge James Robertson on March 22 ordered the release of Mohamedou Slahi, 39, a Mauritanian who lived in Germany and Canada as a computer technician.

My Comment: In short .... the Appeals Court has ruled that before Guantanamo detainees are released by federal judges, those same federal judges must take the time and resources to examine a case before rushing a release order.

Officials: Gitmo Court System Likely To Stay Open

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration may revamp and restart the Bush-era military trial system for suspected terrorists as it struggles to determine the fate of detainees held at Guantanamo Bay and fulfill a pledge to close the prison by January.

The move would further delay terrorism trials and, coupled with recent comments by U.S. military and legal officials, amounts to a public admission by President Barack Obama's team that delivering on that promise is easier said than done.
