Mounting Tensions Escalate Into Violence During Raid at Guantánamo Prison -- New York Times

WASHINGTON — Weeks of mounting tensions between the military and detainees at the wartime prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, escalated into violence on Saturday during a raid in which guards forced prisoners living in communal housing to move to individual cells.

“Some detainees resisted with improvised weapons, and in response, four less-than-lethal rounds were fired,” the military said in a statement. “There were no serious injuries to guards or detainees.”

Capt. Robert Durand, a military spokesman at the base, said the improvised weapons included “batons and broomsticks.” Another military official said that at least one detainee had been hit by a rubber bullet, but that there were no further details about any minor injuries or how the prisoners had resisted.

Military Documents Detail Life At Guantanamo -- NPR

Thousands of pages of previously secret military documents about detainees at the Guantanamo Bay prison now put a name, a history and a face on hundreds of men in captivity there. The documents include details on 158 men on whom no information has ever been released.

The hundreds of classified documents — marked "secret" and "noforn," meaning the information is not to be shared with representatives of other countries — are assessments, interviews and internal memos from the Pentagon's Joint Task Force at Guantanamo. The task force was supposed to determine who the detainees were, how they might be connected to terrorism and whether they posed a threat to the U.S. and its allies in the future.

It has turned out to be a case not of "Yes, we can", but "No, we can't". With America's reputation tarnished by images of kneeling, blindfolded prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, and reports of waterboarding, extraordinary rendition and the abuse of detainees in Abu Ghraib, Barack Obama made Guantanamo's closure one of his key campaign pledges.

Upon taking office in January 2009, one of his first executive orders mandated that the jail would be shut within the year. He was also determined to ensure that, wherever possible, detainees would be tried in civilian courts within the United States. Even Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the 9/11 bombings, was to face a judge and jury, preferably in New York.

Gates: Prospects For Closing Guantanamo 'Very, Very Low' -- CNN

Washington (CNN) -- Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said Thursday that congressional opposition makes the likelihood of closing the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, "very, very low."

Gates' remarks at a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee was the one of the clearest signs yet of the dim prospects for carrying out one of President Barack Obama's earliest executive orders: to shutter the facility where the U.S. military has detained suspected terrorists since 2002.

How Congress Helped Thwart Obama's Plan To Close Guantanamo -- McClatchy News

Two years after the newly minted Obama administration moved to undo what had become one of the most controversial legacies of the George W. Bush presidency by ordering the closure of the prison camps at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a trove of State Department documents made public by the website WikiLeaks is providing new information about why that effort failed.

My Comment: For the first two years of President Obama's Presidency .... he had super Democratic majorities in both the Senate and Congress to pass anything that he wanted. The failure of closing Guantanamo does not rest with Congress, Republicans .... or anyone else. In fact .... it rests in the hands of President Obama himself and his failure to prioritize in his administration the closing of Guantanamo Bay prison after he had signed his executive order to close the facilities when he first assumed the Oval Office.

A group of 173 human rights activists, each wearing an orange jumpsuit and a black hood and representing the remaining 173 prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, rallied in front of the White House on Tuesday to mark the ninth anniversary of the detention center's opening and to protest the Obama administration's inability to close it.

"Detainees, halt!" yelled Carmen Trotta, a volunteer with the group Witness Against Torture, who wore military fatigues as he gathered the protesters in Lafayette Park. "Turn left. Face the home of your captor."

Senate Republicans are pressing the Obama administration for documents that outline procedures used in releasing terrorism-suspect detainees from the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, information the Justice Department and State Department have previously withheld.

In an effort by the GOP to provide greater oversight of the administration's war on terrorism, seven members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, including the presumed next vice chairman, Sen. Saxby Chambliss, Georgia Republican, last month signed letters seeking the documents.

President Obama may formally object to a provision that would prohibit the use of any funds to transfer detainees from the detention facility in Guantanamo Bay to the United States for any purpose.

The provision -- attached to the Defense Authorization bill -- would be a critical blow to the president's stated goal of trying some Guantanamo detainees in civilian courts. Attorney General Eric Holder sent a letter to Congress late last year calling the provision "an extreme and risky encroachment on the authority of the executive branch to determine when and where to prosecute terrorist suspects."

Gitmo Is Not Al Qaeda's 'Number One Recruitment Tool' -- Weekly Standard

During a press conference on December 22, President Obama was asked about the difficulties his administration has encountered in trying to close Guantanamo. The president explained (emphasis added):

Obviously, we haven’t gotten it closed. And let me just step back and explain that the reason for wanting to close Guantanamo was because my number one priority is keeping the American people safe. One of the most powerful tools we have to keep the American people safe is not providing al Qaeda and jihadists recruiting tools for fledgling terrorists.

And Guantanamo is probably the number one recruitment tool that is used by these jihadist organizations. And we see it in the websites that they put up. We see it in the messages that they're delivering.

My Comment: I tend to agree. I have been following the war on terror for the past few years, and I have come across only a few references to Guantanamo Bay prison by Jihadist groups. In fact ..... when it is mentioned .... it is usually used as a point of passage for up and coming Jihadists who were able to convince American authorities that they would not return to Jihad, and are then released. Bragging rights are more important to them than saying how terrible Guantanamo prison is.

The Obama administration acknowledged Sunday that it has no new timetable for closure of the prison camps at Guantánamo, while reiterating a White House talking point that the controversial detention center is an al Qaeda "recruiting tool.''

One of President Barack Obama's earliest executive orders was to order the prison camps emptied by Jan. 22, 2010. But spokesman Robert Gibbs told CNN's State of the Union program that there's no end in sight.

My Comment: The White House could have easily closed down Guantanamo in the past two years. The Democrats and critics of Guantanamo had super majorities in both Houses, and they owned the White House .... but when push came to shove they choose not to close the prison.

My prediction .... to placate their base .... they will be blaming the Republicans for leaving Guantanamo open, counting on everyone suffering from amnesia that it was they who actually decided to leave it open.

Gitmo Detainees Serve Time By Playing Games, Talking To Family On Skype, Taking Classes -- FOX News

President Obama has not fulfilled his pledge to close the detainee prison at Guantanamo Bay, but he has brought Skype, Playstation3 and "life skills" classes to the detainees at the island facility.

While the 181 men being held in the prison wait to learn their fates after the administration fell through on its January 2010 deadline to move them out, 90 percent now live in a communal environment that includes Skype, the online video chat service, and access to a 17,000-book library.

"Welcome Aboard," the sign says.

The cost of the marquee, along with a smaller sign positioned near the airfield: $188,000. Among other odd legacies from war-on-terror spending since 2001 for the troops at Guantanamo Bay: an abandoned volleyball court for $249,000, an unused go-kart track for $296,000 and $3.5 million for 27 playgrounds that are often vacant.

My Comment: I expected this amount to be higher. As to the $150 million annual cost for running the place .... this is also lower than what I had expected. What has to be also calculated are the political costs .... which for a President who made a promise in closing down the place within one year .... hmmmm .... that may be priceless.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Rather than shutting Guantánamo, the U.S. military is gearing up for the war-crimes trial of a former child soldier at the navy base on southeastern Cuba this summer.

The case of detainee Omar Khadr highlights how President Barack Obama has struggled to carry out a pledge he made immediately after taking office to close the globally unpopular military prison, which he called a recruiting tool for terrorists.

Another Spying Scandal At Gitmo

A number of Arabic and Pashtu interpreters at the terror-war detention center at Guantanamo Bay are under active investigation for omitting valuable intelligence from their translations of detainee interrogations, among other security breaches. This could taint some of the evidence at the "9/11 trial" in New York and proceedings against other detainees.

Remarkably, the Pentagon never cleaned up the "mole infestation" at its highest-security facility after the FBI busted a Muslim spy ring at Gitmo in 2003.

My Comment: When your own allies are saying that you "screwed up" .... that is when you know that you have screwed up. The decision and procedure to close Guantanamo has certainly been screw up after another.
