Leaders' Statement From The G20 Summit In London -- BBC

1. We, the Leaders of the Group of Twenty, met in London on 2 April 2009.

2. We face the greatest challenge to the world economy in modern times; a crisis which has deepened since we last met, which affects the lives of women, men, and children in every country, and which all countries must join together to resolve. A global crisis requires a global solution.

3. We start from the belief that prosperity is indivisible; that growth, to be sustained, has to be shared; and that our global plan for recovery must have at its heart the needs and jobs of hard-working families, not just in developed countries but in emerging markets and the poorest countries of the world too; and must reflect the interests, not just of today's population, but of future generations too. We believe that the only sure foundation for sustainable globalisation and rising prosperity for all is an open world economy based on market principles, effective regulation, and strong global institutions.

G-20 Leaders Eye More IMF Funds, Tighter Rules -- Yahoo News/AP

LONDON – Leaders from around the globe made headway Thursday on tackling the world's worst financial crisis since the 1930s, with signs of agreements to give more money to the International Monetary Fund, clamp down on tax havens and tighten regulation over freewheeling hedge funds.

A British official said the Group of 20 rich and developing countries would likely approve giving more than $500 billion to the IMF so it can increase its loans to governments struggling because of the financial crisis. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because talks were ongoing.

Obama, Brown Predict G20 Deal To Fight Recession -- Yahoo News/AP

LONDON – Doggedly optimistic in the face of doubts, President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown predicted Thursday's emergency G-20 economic summit would produce a significant global deal to tackle the deepening worldwide recession.

Others weren't so sure. France warned on Wednesday that neither it nor Germany would agree to "false compromises" that soft-pedal a need for tougher financial regulation to curb abuses that contributed to the spreading chaos. And outside the carefully scripted meetings, protesters smashed bank windows and pelted police with eggs and fruit.

Obama Faces High-Stakes China, Russia Meetings -- Breitbart/AP

LONDON (AP) - Stepping onto the world stage for the first time in his two-month presidency, Barack Obama is holding face-to-face talks with the leaders of the two nations—Russia and China—most aggressively challenging the U.S. position atop the global order.

But first up for Obama was a sit-down with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the host of the London summit of the world's top 20 economies. The U.S. president and first lady Michelle Obama arrived Wednesday morning at 10 Downing Street, where Brown and his wife, Sarah, greeted them and the four smiled broadly.

(Reuters) - The leaders of the Group of Twenty (G20) leading and emerging nations will agree at a summit on Thursday to refrain from currency moves that would hurt each other's economies, according to a draft statement.

Following is the statement, dated March 26, 2009, obtained by Reuters.

We, the Leaders of the Group of Twenty met, for a second time, in London on 2 April.Over the last half century strong growth and increasing international trade has brought untold jobs and prosperity to our citizens. Germans wreck ‘global new deal’

GORDON BROWN’S carefully laid plans for a G20 deal on worldwide tax cuts have been scuppered by an eve-of-summit ambush by European leaders.

Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, last night led the assault on the prime minister’s “global new deal” for a $2 trillion-plus fiscal stimulus to end the recession.

“I will not let anyone tell me that we must spend more money,” she said.

The Spanish finance minister, Pedro Solbes, also dismissed new cash being pledged at Thursday’s London summit.

Tens of thousands of people have marched through London demanding action on poverty, climate change and jobs, ahead of next week's G20 summit.

Marchers from all walks of life were united in their belief that the current global economic system was simply not working and change was urgently needed.

With many facing an uncertain employment future, trust in the financial institutions and in politicians has evaporated.
