Egypt-Iran War Of Words Flares

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Iranian president Ahmadinejad
(Iranian News Agency ISNA, August 1, 2005)

From The Australian:

TENSION between the two major Muslim powers in the Middle East have resulted in unprecedented rhetoric, with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak warning Iran of Cairo's wrath if it tries to undermine Egyptian security interests.

Mr Mubarak did not name Iran in his speech but his point was clear when he said he would not tolerate the intervention of regional powers hostile to peace and aiming to drag the region into the abyss.

Two weeks ago, Egypt announced the arrest of 49 people described as agents of Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group regarded as a proxy for Iran.

Egyptian officials said the men were seeking to destabilise Egypt by carrying out attacks on Israeli tourists, firing on ships in the Suez Canal and smuggling armaments from Egypt to the Gaza Strip.

My Comment: The arrest of a Hezbollah terror gang in Egypt has awaken Egypt to the threats that now exists against them from other Middle Eastern states. But unlike the West .... the Egyptians know that it is Iranian hands that are behind the actions of Hezbollah.

Expect hostilities to increase as Hezbollah prepares itself to win Lebanon's parliamentary elections this summer.

The Egyptian Iranian Cold War Is Now Getting Hot

Iran Outflanks Egypt by Proxy Actors in Sudan and Sinai -- Aviation Week

A battle is currently raging between Egyptian security forces, backed by armor and helicopters, trying to smash secret bases in Central Sinai, set up by a joint clandestine operation between Al Qaeda and Iranian-sponsored Hezbollah. Iran's intelligence and security service, and Al-Quds, an elite unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards whose mission is to assist Shi'ite militias and organizations throughout the world, have deployed "sleeper cells" of agents, who are activated on call from Tehran. On Sunday, an Egyptian cabinet minister of state, Mofeed Shehab, said the Hezbollah ringleader, whom Nasrallah had called Sami Shihab was actually named Muhammad Youssef Mansour. Mansour had traveled to Egypt on two fake passports and had been organizing plans to recruit members, indoctrinate them and send them to Lebanon to train for “hostile operations” inside Egypt. The Egyptian daily Al-Ahram, considered a mouthpiece of the regime, reported that among the arrested are two employees of an Iranian television station that has offices in Cairo.

My Comment: Under reported in the main stream media, this conflict between Egypt and Iran is now getting hot. I can only assume that the Egyptians are not amused to have foreign agents using their country as a launch pad for conflict and war ..... because they know that in the end this will be directed at them.
