Eastern Europe Is Uneasy Over U.S. Ties With Russia

From The New York Times:

BERLIN — The deep concern among America’s Eastern European allies over improved relations between Russia and the United States spilled into the open on Thursday when 22 prominent figures, including Poland’s Lech Walesa and the Czech Republic’s Vaclav Havel, published an open letter to the Obama administration begging not to be forgotten.

In the letter, the leaders urged President Obama and his top policy makers to remember their interests as they negotiate with Russia and review plans for missile defense bases in Poland and the Czech Republic. Abandoning the missile defense plan or giving Russia too big a role in it could “undermine the credibility of the United States across the whole region,” the letter said.

My Comment: The Europeans have a legitimate concern. After having their natural gas supplies put into jeopardy last winter, coupled with Russian threats of missiles being directed at Eastern European countries if an anti-missile platform is installed in Poland .... followed by threats against Georgia and the Ukraine if they pursue NATO membership .... Russia's true colors in how it perceives its relationships with its former Soviet states and allies should and must be are now being shown.

But in this arena of rising tensions .... instead of staying with our allies .... the direction from Washington is that we are now going to engage with the Russians. If I was an eastern European leader .... I would be wondering on what is the game plan (if any) coming from the U.S. President.

Baltic Riots Spread To Lithuania In The Face Of Deteriorating Economic Conditions

From The New York Times:

MOSCOW — Riots broke out once again in the Baltic states on Friday, this time in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, where a group of 7,000 gathered to protest planned economic austerity measures. A smaller group began throwing eggs and stones through the windows of government buildings until the police moved in, using tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

The episode was nearly identical to one on Tuesday in Latvia, when a peaceful protest of 10,000 people erupted into violence. And on Wednesday, a gathering of 2,000 in Sofia, the Bulgarian capital, began throwing stones and snowballs at the Parliament building, calling for the nation’s leaders to resign.

Eastern Europe Braced For A Violent 'Spring Of Discontent'

People walk past broken windows of a shop after riots in Riga January 14, 2009. Latvia's president, speaking after riots in the economically troubled nation, threatened on Wednesday to take steps to dissolve parliament if it failed soon to give people more rights to force early elections. President Valdis Zatlers said Tuesday night's violence, in which youths attacked parliament and then battled police with stones and bottles after an earlier peaceful anti-government demonstration, showed confidence in parliament at a low. From The Guardian:

Riots and street battles are set to spread through Bulgaria, Romania and the Baltic states as inflation, unemployment and racism fuel tension, reports Jason Burke.

Eastern Europe is heading for a violent "spring of discontent", according to experts in the region who fear that the global economic downturn is generating a dangerous popular backlash on the streets.

Hit increasingly hard by the financial crisis, countries such as Bulgaria, Romania and the Baltic states face deep political destabilisation and social strife, as well as an increase in racial tension.

Last week protesters were tear-gassed as they threw rocks at police outside parliament in Vilnius, capital of Lithuania, in a protest against an austerity package including tax rises and benefit cuts.

My Comment: Europe has a history of riots and social unrest when economic problems reach a certain degree .... this is one of those times.
