Chinese Think Tank Warns Of Military Clashes With Japan -- Business Standard/Press Trust Of India

A Chinese think tank has warned that China may get involved in a military conflict with Japan over the disputed Diaoyu Islands, as "big powers" have intensified their efforts for geopolitical and military dominance in the strategic Asia-Pacific region.

An annual report released Tuesday by the Centre for National Defence Policy (CNDP), a part of the Academy of Military Sciences of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), has stated that big powers have intensified their efforts for regional dominance and United States has accelerated its eastward shift of its strategic focus.

"Amidst the strategic competition among big powers, the fierce oceanic competition and frequent regional conflicts, the complexity, sensitivity and uncertainty of China's security environment loom large," official Xinhua news agency quoted the report as saying.

The report came amid the latest flare-up in China's row with Japan over the disputed Diaoyu Islands in East China Sea.

My Comment: This is a very ominous prediction from a top Chinese military think tank with close ties to the Chinese military and government. In short .... they are predicting a future war with Japan over territorial claims.

Suspected Chinese Subs Raise Concerns In Japan -- Stars and Stripes

SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan —Foreign submarines have been spotted unusually close to Japanese turf three times this month, raising concerns that China is escalating a territorial dispute and flexing its sea might.

The subs were spotted just outside Japan’s territorial waters off the coast of Okinawa and the southern Japanese prefecture of Kagoshima. Japanese officials have either declined to comment on the vessels’ nationality or said it is not yet known; Japanese media are reporting they are Chinese.

China questions Japan's sovereignty over Ryukyu islands, heightening tension over existing Senkakus islands dispute.

China is attempting to open a new front in its territorial dispute with Japan by questioning Tokyo's sovereignty over the island of Okinawa, home to 25,000 US troops.

The two countries are already pushing rival claims to the Senkakus, a chain of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea that are controlled by Tokyo. The dispute over the islands, known as the Diaoyu in China, has hit bilateral trade and sent diplomatic relations to their lowest point for decades.

Beijing began its attempt to broaden the territorial dispute earlier this month when the communist party newspaper, the People's Daily, ran an article in which two Chinese academics challenged Japan's sovereignty over the Ryukyu chain of islands, which includes Okinawa.

Japanese Claim On Okinawa Challenged In China -- RT

China’s leading newspaper has upped the ante in the country’s intensifying territorial dispute with Japan, claiming its high time both sides “re-examine” who has sovereignty over Okinawa – which hosts a massive US military contingent.

The People’s Daily, which serves as the mouthpiece for the ruling Communist party, ran the lengthy commentary questioning the historical status of Japan’s southernmost Ryukyu island chain, which includes Okinawa.

The researchers, hailing from a prominent state-run think tank, argue ownership of the Ryukyus should be considered in light of post-World War II declarations which require Japan to return Chinese territory.

TAIPEI — While North Korea has garnered attention as Asia’s top hotspot, experts worry that the real problem is between Beijing and Tokyo over the Japanese-controlled Senkaku Islands, which China calls the Diaoyu Islands.

Over the past month, rhetoric has soared between new nationalistic leaders in China and Japan as each deploys hardware to the region.
