Exhausted But Happy, Chile Miners' Families Savor Heroic Rescue -- Christian Science Monitor

With all 33 Chile miners rescued from the San Jose mine, families celebrated the end of 70 exhausting days – and quickly started to strike their camp and pack for home.

After 70 scorching days and frigid nights waiting in the desert, the families of 33 miners in northern Chile can finally let down their guard.

The last of the miners was hauled to the surface at about 10 p.m. local time, capping the longest such confinement to have ended with the miners alive.

At Gen. Augusto Pinochet’s funeral, one of his grandsons, an Army captain also named Augusto Pinochet, gave a eulogy so defiant and aggressive that he was cashiered the next day. Earlier, as the general lay in state in his dress uniform and Chileans filed by his casket to pay their last respects, the grandson of another general, assassinated by Pinochet’s secret police, spat on the former dictator’s cadaver full in the face.

That was barely three years ago, and it suggested that the ghost of General Pinochet, who ruled Chile from 1973 to 1990 and continued as army commander until 1998, would be hard to exorcise. But the scenes of Chileans’ embracing soldiers who aided in rescue and reconstruction efforts after the huge earthquake last month make all that divisiveness seem an eternity ago.

My Comment: If history is any indication, in times of crisis the military is usually looked upon as a savior .... for Chile, this is a welcome and refreshing change.

SANTIAGO—Chile's massive earthquake has thrust the country's powerful army back into the national spotlight after nearly two decades of keeping a low profile.

Army troops virtually occupy Chile's second-largest city, Concepción, having declared curfew to clamp down on looting that followed Saturday's deadly quake. Troops also patrol a 400-mile-wide area in south-central Chile, keeping the peace as government aid flows to coastal towns that were hit hardest by the weekend's 8.8-magnitude quake and the tsunami that followed.

Chilean Troops Deployed in Hard-Hit City to Quell Unrest -- New York Times

SANTIAGO, Chile — As smaller tremors continued to jolt this earthquake-ravaged country on Tuesday morning, the Chilean government sought to quell looting and unrest in one of the hardest-hit cities by deploying thousands of government troops and extending an overnight curfew until midday.

Chilean newspapers quoted President Michelle Bachelet as saying that the situation in the devastated city of Concepción was “under control,” even though reports indicated that most of the city was still without electricity, phone service or running water.

The government sharply raised the death toll to 711 from Saturday's 8.8 magnitude quake as harrowing scenes of destruction emerged in isolated towns swamped by the giant waves that were triggered by one of the strongest earthquakes in a century.

Chile Counts Cost Of Earthquake As Tsunami Fears Ease -- BBC

Chile has begun to count the cost of its deadly 8.8 magnitude earthquake as nations around the Pacific eased their fears of a devastating tsunami.

The quake, on Saturday morning, killed at least 300 people - 90% of them in their homes. It is feared the damage may cost tens of billions of dollars.

One major rescue effort is in the city of Concepcion, where dozens are feared trapped in a collapsed apartment block.

SANTIAGO, Chile – A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Chile early Saturday, killing at least 78 people, collapsing buildings and setting off a tsunami.

A huge wave reached a populated area in the Robinson Crusoe Islands, 410 miles (660 kilometers) off the Chilean coast, said President Michele Bachelet.

Tsunami warnings were issued over a wide area, including South America, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines, Russia and many Pacific islands.

Piñera Wins Chiles's Presidential Run-Off -- The Telegraph

Sebastian Piñera won Chile's presidential election yesterday, ending two decades of centre-Left rule since the end of Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship.

The ruling coalition's candidate Eduardo Frei conceded defeat to the billionaire after 60 per cent of polling stations reported a 52 per cent to 48 per cent advantage for Mr Pinera.

Mr Piñera had a wide lead in every poll, and the race only tightened after Mr Frei and outgoing President Michelle Bachelet repeatedly invoked the legacy of Pinochet, whose dictatorship was supported by parties that make up Mr Piñera's coalition.
