Experts Claim Burma Is Working On A Nuclear Weapons Program

An alleged nuclear factory to which the defector had access, near the capital, Naypyidaw, captured in a satellite image.

Burma Is Working On Nuclear Weapons Programme, Experts Claim -- The Telegraph

Burma is working on a nuclear weapons programme, experts have concluded, after its existence was exposed by leaked photographs.

Intelligence monitoring of the country’s arms purchases from North Korea has been intensified as a result.

Satellite tracking and electronic surveillance in particular have been stepped up. Concerns over the regime’s attempts to develop a nuclear bomb prompted the US State Department to demand last week that the ruling junta disclose an inventory of its nuclear technology.

Burmese Junta 'Is Developing A Nuclear Threat' -- The Independent

Burma is trying to develop nuclear weapons, according to exiled journalists who claim to have uncovered evidence of a nascent missile programme.

Reporters working for the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB), a respected dissident radio station that broadcasts into South-east Asia out of Oslo, say they have collected files and photographs which suggest that the country's ruling junta is mining and experimenting with uranium with the aim of one day creating a bomb.

Is Burma Building A Nuclear Weapons Program?

What's Burma Building In There? -- Foreign Policy Blog

This Google Earth image of a mysterious building in Northern Burma posted by the New America Foundation's Jeffrey Lewis on the Arms Control Wonk blog has been making the Internet rounds.

It may look like an Olympic-sized swimming pool, but the thing is huge -- 80 meters long on each side and seems to roughly match up with the Sydney Morning Herald's report of a Burmese nuclear reaction construction project. The Institute for Science and International Security has more.

My Comment: When there is smoke, there is fire. In the case of a suspected nuclear weapons program in Burma, evidence indicates that there is a definite interest by the Burmese Government to at least "look at this" possibility, including spending money on developing some rudimentary infrastructure.

Should we be worried? .... hmmmm .... probably.

Burma’s Nuclear Secrets

From Sydney Morning Herald:

Is Burma preparing to build a nuclear arsenal? Two years of interviews with defectors have persuaded two Australian investigators, Desmond Ball and Phil Thornton, there is more to the claim than global scepticism suggests.

A FEW years back, a paranoid military regime packed up Burma’s capital and shifted it north a few hundred kilometres. Rangoon, it seems, simply wasn’t safe enough any more. The generals’ new home was to be known as the Abode of Kings; more commonly as Naypyidaw. A city rose from the tropical plains with shiny buildings and slick roadways – a strange priority in a country suffering chronic poverty and a health system at the bottom of world rankings.

My Comment: To develop a nuclear program, Burma would need a huge infrastructure and the personnel to do it. For the moment ... they do not have it .... as far as we can tell.
