Central African Republic's Rebellion Continues To Grow

Rebels In Central African Republic Take City Of Bambari -- BBC

Rebels in the Central African Republic (CAR) have seized the key city of Bambari as part of their offensive against President Francois Bozize.

The city, the third largest in the country, fell into rebels hands after two hours of fighting with government forces, witnesses said.

Bambari is one of several towns recently captured by the rebels - and the nearest one to the capital Bangui.

The rebels accuse President Bozize of failing to honour a 2007 peace deal.

Their move into Bambari comes a day after regional leaders called on the rebels to withdraw back to their original positions and accept talks with the government.

Fears Of UN Pullout Prompts The Central African Republican Government To Plead For Help

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The Central African Republic on Tuesday pleaded with the U.N. Security Council for help as it grapples with rebels ahead of an expected withdrawal of U.N. peacekeepers stationed there and in neighboring Chad.

Last month the Central African Republic announced it would delay presidential and legislative elections until January 23, 2011 from October 24 due to insecurity caused by rebels in the northeastern part of the country.

Bowing to demands from Chad, the Security Council in May instructed U.N. peacekeepers in Chad and Central African Republic, known as MINURCAT, to withdraw from the impoverished part of Africa by the year's end.

10 Dead In Rebel Attacks In Central Africa: Aid Groups -- Yahoo News/AFP

BANGUI (AFP) – Members of a Ugandan rebel group have launched attacks against towns in the Central African Republic that have left at least 10 people dead in the last two weeks, humanitarian groups said Saturday.

The attacks by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), launched from its rear bases in the Democratic Republic of Congo, have also forced hundreds of people to flee their villages, UN and aid group officials said.

In the worst incident, LRA rebels stormed the market of the city of Mboki on July 24, the groups said.
