Did Poland Permit A Secret CIA Prison Camp For Terrorists

Poland Shaken By Case Alleging An Illicit CIA Prison There -- L.A. Times

A Polish inquiry on whether the CIA had a secret prison in the country where suspects were brutally interrogated could entangle former top Polish officials.

Evidence that a foreign power was allowed to conduct illicit activities on Polish soil has deeply shaken many Poles' faith in the United States and in Poland's sense of itself as a successful democracy born from the ashes of the Cold War.

The funeral Mass and procession to the nation's most sacred cathedral put a somber end to a week of mourning in Poland. Kaczynski and his wife were killed last weekend when the presidential plane clipped a tree and crashed while landing at a fog-shrouded provincial Russian airport. Many top Polish military officials, lawmakers and leading figures from the nation's recent history also died in the crash.

Poland Mourns For Its President

Poland Mourns Death Of President, Other Top Officials In Plane Crash -- Washington Post

WARSAW -- Thousands of Poles streamed by the presidential palace in central Warsaw Sunday in a second day of national mourning for President Lech Kaczynski and a delegation of senior officials who were killed when the presidential jet crashed in heavy fog on approach to an airfield in western Russia.

The Saturday morning crash, which officials said killed all 97 people on board, including the president's wife, generated what participants described as a spontaneous outpouring of support, not necessarily for Kaczynski's nationalist politics or his party, but for the office of the presidency and the military officers, lawmakers and civil servants who were killed alongside him in the service of the Polish nation.
