Mullah Omar’s Triumphalism -- Michael Rubin, Commentary

On Wednesday, Mullah Omar, the elusive leader of the Taliban, released a message for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which this year falls on October 26. Omar’s message is well worth reading, especially against the backdrop of Obama administration efforts to negotiate with the Taliban.

As Ahmad Majidyar—probably the most astute Afghanistan analyst in the United States—points out, Mullah Omar used his address to redouble his commitment to a complete military victory. “We will continue to wage Jihad against the invaders who have invaded our country until the occupation ends completely,” he declared.

My Comment: He has made his intentions very clear in this message. He has zero interest to talk to the U.S., NATO, or to the Afghan government. In short .... no let up in the war until they have complete victory. I guess he is not interested in the "peace process".

They’re fast approaching yet another anniversary of the day their supreme leader, Mullah Mohammed Omar, vanished into the mountains outside the city of Kandahar. He was perched on the back of a motorcycle driven by his brother-in-law and right-hand man, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, getting away as the U.S.-led invasion force and its Northern Alliance partners closed in. Senior and former Taliban officials say there has not been one confirmed sighting of their Amir-ul-Momineen—“commander of the faithful”—in the 11 years since.

My Comment: His absence has been noted and reported on for a very long time .... but the Taliban is a network of commanders and leaders .... not one man. I have always believed that he is dead .... a figurehead that is used only when it is convenient for the Taliban Quetta Shura to promote a message or cause.

Mullah Omar Tells Afghans Taliban Are Winning -- Time Magazine

(KABUL) — The Taliban's shadowy leader Mullah Mohammad Omar says Afghan fighters are winning the war and warns Americans they are wasting lives and billions in tax dollars.

The Taliban leader is also telling his followers that the Americans will soon leave Afghanistan and urges them to avoid hurting civilians — instructions U.S. commanders say the Taliban frequently ignore.

Some Reports Are Trickling In That Confirm The Capture Of Afghan Taliban Leader Mullah Omar

BREAKING: Oliver North Confirms Mullah Omar Capture -- Big Journalism

Late this afternoon, Lt. Colonel Oliver North confirmed that Taliban leader and Osama bin Laden ally, Mullah Mohammed Omar has been captured. The exclusive news of Omar’s capture was broken by Big Government and Big Journalism Monday evening.

According to Colonel North, Omar was picked up in Karachi on March 27th by the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI) who placed him under house arrest in what they call “community care.”

Per North’s sources, “[Omar] has since been transferred to a secret ISI lock-up under the Pakistani euphemism: “institutional care.”

My Comment: No confirmation of this capture from any official organization .... which is why I am skeptical of this Big Journalism "scoop". Having said that, this is a story that cannot be kept under wraps for any long period of time .... Mullah Omar is too well known and if he was captured the story would have leaked out a long time ago.

Having said that .... if he has been captured, I will go by my original prediction that this news will be made official in the next week or two. If nothing comes out .... this will tell me that the story of his capture is bogus.

Through key intelligence sources in Afghanistan and Pakistan, I have just learned that reclusive Taliban leader and top Osama bin Laden ally, Mullah Omar has been taken into custody.

According to the State Department’s Rewards for Justice Program there is a bounty of up to $10 million on Omar for sheltering Osama bin-Laden and his al-Qaeda network in the years prior to the September 11 attacks as well as the period during and immediately thereafter.

At the end of March, US Military Intelligence was informed by US operatives working in the Af/Pak theater on behalf of the D.O.D. that Omar had been detained by Pakistani authorities. One would assume that this would be passed up the chain and that the Secretary of Defense would have been alerted immediately. From what I am hearing, that may not have been the case.

My Comment: Andrew Breitbart (he is the founder of Big Journalism, Big Hollywood, and Big Government) is laying the groundwork to develop a news blog site devoted to national security/military issues .... he feels that there is a void in this area of news coverage .... of which I agree. As to this story .... I know that he has excellent contacts in this area .... so there is a possibility that there are some legs in this story. I am still skeptical, but I do know that his and Brad Thor's sources are very good.

I will give this story another week or two before passing judgment .... if it is true we will probably know about it by then.

Pakistani intelligence aids Mullah Omar's move to Karachi.Mullah Mohammed Omar, the one-eyed leader of the Afghan Taliban, has fled a Pakistani city on the border with Afghanistan and found refuge from potential U.S. attacks in the teeming Pakistani port city of Karachi with the assistance of Pakistan's intelligence service, three current and former U.S. intelligence officials said.

Mullah Omar, who hosted Osama bin Laden and other al Qaeda leaders when they plotted the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, had been residing in Quetta, where the Afghan Taliban shura -- or council -- had moved from Kandahar after the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

My Comment: Reading stories like this one do not surprise me .... but still .... when one realizes that we give Pakistan's ISI hundreds of millions in aid each year .... it is both depressing and concerning that if these are our allies, we are definitely in trouble.

We should also be concerned about the following .... if they should conduct themselves in this manner, what else are they doing that they are not telling us. In a country that has a stockpile of nuclear weapons and nuclear materials .... this is a question that should always be on our minds when we do business with these people. But something is telling me that we do not .... and if anything .... it appers that we are in denial with what is happening in this region.

QUETTA, Pakistan – Taliban leader Mullah Muhammed Omar is not in Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province, a senior official said Friday, and urged the United States not to carry out missile attacks in the region.

The New York Times reported this week that U.S. officials are weighing extending missile strikes into Baluchistan in pursuit of Taliban and al-Qaida leaders who have shifted from militant strongholds farther north.

Western and Afghan officials have long suspected that Omar and other members of the Taliban government ousted by the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 have found refuge in or near the city of Quetta, Baluchistan's capital.

My Comment: How can anyone say that he is not there .... when they have not met him. But I am sure of one thing .... if they do find him and/or his lieutenants .... regardless of where .... there will be a drone strike.
