British detectives investigating the Lockerbie bombing are to travel to Libya for the first time.

Under a deal sealed by David Cameron on his surprise visit to Tripoli yesterday, officers from the Dumfries and Galloway force in Scotland will travel to the Libyan capital next month.

The team of detectives hope to track down the masterminds behind Britain’s worst ever terrorist atrocity, in which 270 people died in 1988 after the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie.

The Maltese courts have been asked to gather fresh evidence connected to the 1988 Lockerbie disaster, The Times has learnt.

Hearings took place behind closed doors last week before Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit. Several Maltese witnesses were called to testify.

The court appears to be reviewing evidence connected to travel logistics but no further information could be obtained from Maltese or Scottish sources.

A Scottish MP has called for an inquiry into the conviction of the Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi after his grounds of appeal were published in full for the first time.

The 800-page report by the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission was published on the internet by a Scottish Sunday newspaper which ignored laws preventing its release.

It contains details which al-Megrahi, the only suspect convicted in the case, claimed support doubts about his ties to the bombing.

LONDON — Scotland’s chief prosecutor has asked Libya’s new government to assist in tracking down documentary evidence and witnesses for a possible new trial for those responsible for the Lockerbie airliner bombing.

A statement issued Monday by a spokesman for Scotland’s lord advocate, Frank Mulholland, said Britain’s Foreign Office had been asked to relay the request to the Transitional National Council, Libya’s interim governing body after the overthrow of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi.

The startling extent to which Labour misled the world over the controversial release of the Lockerbie bomber is exposed today in top-secret documents obtained by The Mail on Sunday.



In public, senior Ministers from the last Labour Government and the Scottish First Minister have repeatedly insisted that terminally ill Abdelbaset Al Megrahi was freed on compassionate grounds in a decision taken by Scottish Ministers alone.



But the confidential papers show that Westminster buckled under pressure from Colonel Gaddafi, who threatened to ignite a 'holy war' if Megrahi died in his Scottish cell.

My Comment: Regular readers of this blog know that from day that the British/Scottish governments made the decision to release the Lockerbie Bomber, I have been continuously foaming at the mouth over this unjust and immoral decision. Their reasons to release him made no sense then .... and with more and more documents now being released by the provisional government in Libya .... my worse fears on why this mass murderer was released are now being confirmed.

Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi, the only man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing, has fled Tripoli and his neighbours said they believed he had gone into hiding with Col Gaddafi.



Standing outside the smart modern two-storey villa belonging to Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi in the upmarket Hay Damascus suburb of Tripoli, they said he had not been seen since the rebels’ sudden advance on the capital.



Mr Megrahi, who is thought to have been treated with the most treatments available to keep his prostate cancer at bay for two years since he was released from prison in Scotland, was given his villa as a reward by the Gaddafi regime.

Families of the Pan Am Flight 103 victims Sunday night were savoring a moment they had craved for more than 20 years.



With Moammar Khadafy's long reign in its final moments, relatives of the 259 people killed in the bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland, celebrated his imminent fall.

"I never thought this day would come," said Susan Cohen, 73, whose 20-year-old daughter, Theodora, was killed in the 1988 act of terror ordered by the Libyan strongman.

US President Barack Obama had made a secret deal with Libyan rebel leaders to capture the freed Lockerbie bomber from Libya and return him to face justice in the US, the Mail on Sunday reported yesterday.

Libya's former justice minister claims Colonel Gaddafi personally ordered the Lockerbie bombing which killed 270 people in 1988.

Swedish tabloid Expressen says Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, who has just resigned from his cabinet post in protest at the violent crackdown against anti-government demonstrations, told their correspondent in Libya: 'I have proof that Gaddafi gave the order about Lockerbie.'

He told Expressen Gaddafi gave the order to Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the only man convicted in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, which killed all 259 people on board and 11 on the ground.
