Concerns Rise As U.S. Plans Afghan Exit -- Wall Street Journal
KABUL—Afghan President Hamid Karzai this weekend returned here from Washington bearing important news: This spring, U.S. forces will transfer full security responsibilities to the Afghans, retaining an advisory role.
Mr. Karzai has long pressed for this shift, demanding almost a year ago an immediate withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghan villages. Now that it is finally occurring, the looming question—for the U.S. and for Kabul—is whether the fledgling Afghan security forces would be able to hold ground against the Taliban once the snows melt in March and the annual fighting season begins.
