Only 13 States Remain Outside IAEA Monitoring Regime: Amano -- Global Security Newswire

The number of nations outside the International Atomic Energy Agency's monitoring regime has dropped to 13, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said on Monday in a prepared statement.

The U.N. organization is responsible for using site inspections and other means to ensure that non-nuclear weapon member states do not tap atomic resources for military use.

"The number of countries without safeguards agreements in force has fallen to 13," Amano said in remarks to the U.N. General Assembly. "I ask all of them to bring such agreements into force as soon as possible."
