(CNN) -- Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo's defense team will take his case to the country's Senate on Friday as an impeachment trial gets under way.
The lower chamber of Congress voted to impeach Lugo, a former Catholic bishop, nearly unanimously, and some say his opponents in the Senate have made up their minds to oust him.
But supporters of Lugo's are calling it an attempted coup d'etat, a charged term that raises fears of political or social unrest in the land-locked South American nation of 6.5 million.
